How they got the name "The Guess Who" is interesting.
In 1965 they recorded their version of Johnny Kidd and the Pirates "Shakin' All Over",
they decided to give radio station DJ's copies of it with the label printed "guess who?"
The record was a surprise hit and the name stuck!
They became the Guess Who? ....dropping the question mark around 1968.
Pete Townshend's art school friend Mike McInnerney came up with the name "The Who"
in early 1964. Soon after their new manager changed it to "The High Numbers",
trying to change the Who into a "mod group". In the fall of 1964 they reverted back to "The Who",
with a new management team, Kit Lambert and Chris Stamp.
Interestingly, "The Who" regularly played their version of Shakin' All Over
live in the 1968-1970 era. Check the version on Live at Leeds.
Pete's friend Mike McInnerney designed their "Tommy" album cover artwork in 1969
and introduced Pete to Meher Baba in early 1968, which inspired "Tommy".
