The term "visible minority" is so cringe worthy, embarrassing and condescending. "I see you, you visible minority, you. You're helpless because your skin is darker and you need special protection from other people, so we, compassionate Canada will take care of you."

I've always found this term to be so condescending and quite frankly racist. Canada can and should do better and treat everyone equally regardless of how much melanin they have in their skin. What say you?

Disagree with what? And how is someone "invisible"? Doesn't your statement by default make the term "visibility minority" silly at the least, racist at it's worst? If there are "visible minorities" then they're must, by definition be "invisible minorities".

We'll get around to fixing that as soon as we deal with all this stuff that has a far higher priority and is a scourge upon the country:

NAACP | Criminal Justice Fact Sheet

https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/...hs-police.html

Oh wait, it was Canada you were stupidly slanging.....my bad.

You posted in the thread, but made no attempt to answer and/or discuss the question.

Yup. The phrase "visible minorities" is used to differentiate from the invisible minorities, which includes members of religious groups and other minorities who don't stand out. So to say the term "visible minority" is racist would simply be wrong but people will see what they want to see, I guess. I am not seeing how referring to each ethnic group by name or by a generic colour word like black is somehow less racist. Visible minority includes many visible minorities, not one or two.

There have been other threads on this.

You're right visible minority is so bad. We should follow the US lead and just get back to calling everyone N*ggers and shooting them in the street.

i don't know anyone who uses that vile term except rappers in their lyrics. Weird non sequitor and deflection though; very defensive post. I can condemn both as being awful ,insulting and wrong.

I'll play.

Whether or not there's anything wrong with the term "visible minority" -- I'm in invisible one; I'm Jewish -- there is something wrong with the way that things are handled outside of Canada.

Just last week in Toronto, there was the man (not black, but not aspirin-white either) who'd run over many people on the sidewalk with a van. When confronted by the police, he held out a cell phone, which might have been perceived as a gun or as an act of aggression. This is how it was handled (and please notice the headline and the fact that it's from The New York Times):

https://www.nytimes.com/2018/04/24/w...table-lam.html

Several days ago in Georgia, police thought this ex-NFL player's cell phone was a gun. They tackled him, knocked his teeth out, choked him until he was unconscious, and arrested him. This is how that was handled:

And earlier in the week, several black men were arrested for just being in a Starbucks in Philadelphia. This is how that was handled:

If anyone thinks that nothing is wrong, they're blind (and worse).

You asked: Canada can and should do better and treat everyone equally regardless of how much melanin they have in their skin. What say you?
My answer: See the above examples.
