The USA is making things worse by the day!
"Washington increased tariffs at 12:01 a.m. ET on $34 billion US worth of Chinese imports, a first step in what could become an accelerating series of tariffs.

Retaliatory measures "took effect immediately," said a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Lu Kang. Lu gave no details, but the Communist Party newspaper People's Daily said the customs agency was carrying out a plan announced last month to impose 25 per cent tariffs on a $34-billion list of American goods including soybeans, pork and electric cars.

China also announced a fresh case against the U.S. at the World Trade Organization."

Just wait. Trump will pull the US out of the WTO.

Trump was already hinting at it last weekend. The White House is violating WTO rules and the latest bright idea to get around this is to "abandon the fundamental principles of the WTO rules." Each day that this gets worse I wonder why no one is taking responsibility for ending the dictatorship that is forming in the USA.

You would think the protests would be bigger and millions would be out in the streets.

My guess though, is that people are putting hopes in the mid-terms. If that doesn't go well, then who knows what happens next.

You could hit back by prohibiting the export of Justin Bieber and Celine Dion music to the US. That will teach them.

Let's make it official.

David, no offense intended but you are so far off base it leads me to believe you must be a very young, inexperienced person with not much education about North American history. Some day after all of this tariffs mess is resolved and blown over you may care to browse through some of the many past topics that have been posted here in the Canada forum, in which other Americans have made the exact same proposal that you just made, or else suggested that America should conquer and annex Canada. You'll find that most Americans who make these proposals often have greedy, impractical and self-aggrandizing reasons for their proposals as well as thoughtless fantasies of USA achieving global domination that are very much in direct conflict with Canadian ideals and the Canadian way of life, autonomy and sovereignty.

You'll also find that many of those posters are just as condescending and patronizing in making the same erroneous self-superior suggestion that you just did (whether intentional or not), in saying that USA and Canada are family with USA being a bigger, wiser brother and Canada being a little brother who needs to be governed and protected by big brother. Nothing could be further from the truth and to make such a statement only demonstrates how you and so many other Americans with your frame of mind know next to nothing about Canada and Canadians and about Canada's real, historical relationship with USA.

You'll also find that Canadians have literally hundreds of valid reasons for why such a joining of our two nations can never be possible, practical, beneficial or desirable for Canada. Canada and USA have been and still can be good friends, allies and trade partners but that is all it will ever be. That should be good enough for America instead of America wanting so much more, and it's better than being enemies.

Oh, and last but not least - Canadians speak and spell Canadianese, aka "proper English" and/or French Canadian, and many other languages, but not Americanese .......... and America has never protected Canada from anything at any time and it still doesn't and it doesn't need to. It just wants its citizens to think USA protects Canada and to conveniently forget about the occasional attempts that USA has made to try dominate or overcome Canada and then been repulsed.

.

Once again I cannot rep you via TOS rules but ...dang...luv the listing of points for him to ponder.

Lastly, as you mention, where the rubber hits the road, Canada has intervened and aided on behalf of the U.S. in everything from natural disasters to international incidents to terrorist activities and the mitigations of effects of all of those while the obverse has yet to happen.

This "umbrella" nonsense is nothing but more of the same bravado silliness they're noted for worldwide.

Interesting to consider if it weren't for their fubarred foreign policy underwritten with the imperialistic mindset bolstered by their MIC needing an infusion of cash, we'd not have had the enemies they created.

Tongue in cheek time: Since Trump's new best bud is Putin; perhaps we should build a pipe north from Alberta to the northern passage instead? Trump obviously couldn't object since he's preaching inclusivity. Let's have some fun with the mentally challenged orangeness.

I actually think that people in the USA don't realize what's happening. Trump has been lying for months, and because he repeats the lies every day people are inclined to think he tells the truth. Imagine a country where the people cannot trust the president, where he brainwashes with propaganda blaming first Muslims, then immigrants, next the allies, and now all other countries.

Just reading on this forum, I would say that 99% of USA posters believe what Trump says. That number might be a bit lower now that retaliatory tariffs have been imposed, but the general consensus still seems to be that Trump is making great strides to make the USA a stronger country. That couldn't be farther from the truth. If the Asian block steps up while the USA is taking an isolationist position, a recovery may not be in the cards.

Some of the cult-like attitude towards Trump has infected some Canadians too. I was reading the reader comments below a CBC article earlier this week and just shaking my head at various Canadians bashing Trudeau for not agreeing to what Trump wants with respect to NAFTA.

I'm old and given to curmudgeonly thoughts and behaviour.

Americans have rolled the dice with the typical greedy gamblers belief everything to gain and nothing to lose from the very day they voted for this man knowing his history of maleficent behaviour. In that sense, I'm inclined to say they were too quick to believe the worst of Canada and acceptable to thinking the best of Putin.

If this turns out badly for them; they will have been given yet one more lesson to learn from that they will yet again ignore with the usual 'numero-uno' blather overtaking common sense.

Just an old phart's perceptions gained from numerous historical events proving them correct.
