I've been watching the Huawei debacle unfold for a while now and have come to the conclusion we're putting ourselves at risk by waffling with China. Trudeau may think walking softly will garner some reward vis-à-vis Canadians in detention etc., but, China has an agenda and is not given to making humanitarian gestures when so much is at stake.
An excellent article that serves to illustrate the longer view::
As I have often expressed, I have been concerned for some time about the growing influence of China in Canada.
I am also concerned about the secrecy of deals with our government. An example is the deal for a Chinese baby formula plant in Kingston two years ago. The deal our government made is shrouded in mystery. Why?
How this all serves to put pressure on China remains to be seen, as it has become evident public opinion does not factor greatly into China's governance.
The hope is that all of this adds up to Xi rethinking his bullyboy tactics of revenge detention of Canadian citizens not being in his countries best interests "optics-wise". He has so far gotten away with this behaviour because countries lust after his billions of consumers but, if doing business with China puts you at risk of this worst possible type of coercion, that of your citizens being held as blackmail...…..countries with some form of remaining moral compass or at the very least having to make a choice between going up against the U.S. or China, may just decide …… thanks but no thanks.
If substantively true; why am I not surprised at these machinations by bought and paid for, self serving has beens serving to undercut Canada's position?
The players names read like a laundry list of the usual good old Quebec underbelly of Politics. No wonder the west gets pizzed being governed by these types. Why can't these corrupt old b******s just take a walk in the snow and never be heard from again.
Christia Freeland seems to be the only one with balls roaming the halls of Ottawa these days.

I think this may have a great deal to do with Freeland's family background. Her grandfather was a Polish journalist before WWII, and during the Nazi occupation of Poland, worked for a Polish newspaper coerced by the Nazis.
Further, during the cold war, Freeland herself was a prominent scholar on Russian and Soviet studies, having received the prestigious Rhodes Scholar while she was at Harvard and Oxford. She later worked as a journalist for the Financial Times and The Economist, two of the most respected papers in the western world specifically as their Russian affairs correspondent.
In 2014, when Putin placed her on the "banned" list barring her from entry into Russia permanently, Freeland wrote this on Twitter to Putin: "Love Russ lang/culture, loved my yrs in Moscow; but it's an honour to be on Putin's sanction list.". You gotta have some balls to write something like that to Putin's face, and that was before she was elected MP to the House of Commons.
So long story short, I'm not surprised at all with regards to Freeland's tough stance on China. It's not her first time dealing with a bullying authoritarian regime, and we are lucky to have her as Foreign Minister.
Trudeau asking Trump to intercede on Canada's behalf is laughable at best and stupidly misguided at worst.
Trump's the cause of this nonsense and Xi is unlikely to place any value upon what he has to say. In point of fact it could indeed cause even more damage to Canada as China is not any more pre-disposed to follow treaties or rule of law than the U.S. has now shown itself to be. He has shown he's as ready to double down as Trump is.
Xi will very likely resort to the same tactic Trump is addicted to... the simplistic method of economic might based bullying.
