Why are residents of Halifax called Haligonians?
The city is called Halifax, not Haligon. So why aren't they referred to as Halifaxians? The same goes for Glasgow, Scotland. The residents of Galsgow are known as Glaswegians and not Glasgowians. Also, citizens of Liverpool, England are known as Liverpudlians and not Liverpoolians. The city isn't called Liverpud. These are the only three cities that I can think of off the top of my head that have these unique endings for residents of their respective cities. Does anyone know the reason and/or history behind this? This is very interesting to me. Thanks
