It seems that this is going to become a subject for Canada so I started a thread. And this is a link to our party leaders speaking at a conference against antisemitism https://www.cbc.ca/player/play/2274400835704

I thought Trudeau spoke well.

Even with cameras everywhere, truth is still the first casualty in war.

Trudeau condemned the hospital explosion yesterday and already the National Post are criticizing him for it. Correct me if I’m wrong, but didn’t he simply say bombing a hospital was “unacceptable” and “illegal”? That should apply regardless of who did it, although it’s clear to me it was Islamic Jihad, the terrorist group allied with Hamas who had a rocket misfire. I didn’t see anywhere where Trudeau said it was Israel’s fault.

Been talking to my kids about this. They have decided that as we have no direct connection to either side they aren’t supporting one side over the other. They support peace. They also, and I agree, say that Hamas does not represent the true needs of Palestine

Not sure if your kids are grown up or not, but they have a much better take than most adults you see posting about it online these days

I also believe it was a Hamas rocket that misfired.

I think the Hamas intrusion into Israel and the atrocities were meant to be a suicide mission intended to provoke Israel into a war, which was intended in turn to provoke Islamic countries into a war to destroy Israel completely.

All of which may yet happen.

I emailed the (Jewish) father of my nieces and he said how disheartened he was over the pro-Palestinian protests and how much it meant when non-Jews reached out.

At my sister's law firm, she said the Jewish lawyers were sitting in their offices crying.

However, Israel doesn't always have clean hands and the situation in Gaza was almost predictable. That doesn't take away from who started this whole thing.

I roll my eyes and bite my tongue when I hear people saying there are "rules" to war. When the shooting starts all rules go right out the window.

Israel was starting to normalize relations with a lot of M.E countries and Hamas would obviously see this as a threat to their hold on the Palestinians. Judging by the reactions from M.E countries, unfortunately it looks like Hamas knew what they were doing. The sad thing is clearly they don't give a crap about the Palestinian people and it is sad that countries such as Jordan, Egypt and Saudi Arabia isn't calling out Hamas on this. Additionally, I think the Hamas leader is in Qatar and has a safe haven there. He isn't even in Palestinian land. We should be holding Qatar's feet to the fire for this. The man should be prosecuted by the Israeli Justic system for terrorism and mass murder.

The situation is complicated and frankly I don’t think there will ever be a solution acceptable to both sides. Any temporary solution will just kick the problem down the road. The only permanent solution seems to involve elimination of one or both sides (i.e. genocide), and that is unacceptable.

So since I can suggest no solutions and have very limited knowledge of the long history of the area, I limit my posts to the current Canadian aspects of the situation. My sympathies though are with the victims, whoever they may be.
