Another day, another crisis.

And further from the WSJ: the thousands were stolen in Canada last year, loaded into shipping containers and smuggled from the Port of Montreal to distant ports in Africa. Canadians discovering Africa. Or is it Africa discovering Canada?

Canada, a car stolen every 6 minutes = crisis

In the USA car stolen every 31 seconds = just another day

Some years ago, a list of the ten cities in the USA with the highest car theft rates was published. Six of them were in my home state. We were not surprised.

But now NJ is not even in the top ten!

The rise in car thefts is a bit of a concern. Car thefts are often a sympton of a growing problem, not just the car thefts themselves. Car theft is usually done by really young people and is often considered a gateway crime which leads to much more serious crimes. The people making real money off of this are not the ones on the street stealing them. This is how many career criminals start off. So i wouldn't be so dismissive over this news.

New jersey had quite the reputation for this in the 90s.

There is a news story on the NJ12 channel tonight about a chop shop that was busted. Maybe we will reclaim our title.

I remember well what I saw in New Jersey along the highways in 1970. In every mile there were 2-3 vehicles abandoned in the center divide, with wheels gone, either on blocks or dropped onto the ground. I thought they were people stranded when the car broke down and someone stole their wheels or other parts before they could get it towed, but maybe they were stolen cars stripped and then dumped there. Some had missing hoods and you could see that there was no engine.
