Hello!

I've got a question about Canada:
In the Canadian Census, are ethnicity and race asked separately?

Thank you!

Statistics Canada asks questions on "ethnic origin", however these numbers are somewhat unreliable since they placed "Canadian" ethnic origin on top of the list of choices a few censuses ago. I think it was mainly a political move to get as many people as possible to count themselves simply as "Canadians" rather than as "hyphenated Canadians".

Millions of people are now counted as being of "Canadian" ethnic origin and may actually be of French, English, Japanese, Jamaican or whatever origin. This may be great for social cohesion and national identity but has caused considerable headaches for researchers.

The "race" questions fall under the "visible minorities" category, under which you have subcategories such as Black, South Asian, Asian, etc.

Default Ethnicity & Race in Canada census

Thanks Acajack!

So there is one question asking one's ethnicity, and another asking whether you belong to a visible minority?
Or is the number of visible minorities summed up from those who choose a non-European ethnicity in the first question?

Someone else may confirm this but I believe there is a question asking people if they consider themselves to be visible minorities. Then, if they answer yes, there is a follow-up question asking which one.

And that question is separate from the ethnicity one?

Default Ethnic origins & race in Canada

I found some information here .
So apparently, ethnic origins have always been asked in the Canadian census, but starting from 1996, there was a question about visible minorities.

Something interesting about the Canadian visible minorities:
Quote:
what’s considered a racial “minority” in the US is not necessarily considered one in Canada. For example, in Canada, we term Arabs/West Asians as “visible minority”; in the US, they’re “white.” In the US, native Americans are considered racial minority; in Canada, First Nations people are not, though they are counted in a separate census module. Finally and most interestingly (for me), whereas in the US they report “Asian” as a composite blob, in Canada we distinguish among South Asian, Chinese, Filipino/a, Southeast Asian, Korean, and Japanese.
