Victoria seems very safe - I've walked the downtown at night and not once did I feel in any kind of danger. I have relatives who live in Sidney, which is retirement central - lots of old people, but a lovely little town right by the ocean. It's also pretty friendly, everyone seems to know each other. The beaches in the Victoria area are beautiful and the skiing/snowboarding at Mt. Washington is great.
The city is very white bread - Parkland Secondary in Saanich is about 90% white, unlike the Vancouver area which is a mix of Asians, Persians and Caucasian. I've heard parts of the Victoria area have some Natives though.
The weather is also some of the best in Canada, very sunny, it doesn't get too hot in summer nor too cold in winter.
That's spiny fruit is called JackFruit. Yes... the smell is horrendous! But I've heard the flesh to be creamy and sweet... described to me once like ice cream. I haven't been able to get past the stink factor on that lovely fruit though.
The stinky one is called Durian, Jack fruit is more crunchy and smell better.
