Bringing food across the border
Going camping in Manitoba in about a month. Can I bring a weekend's worth of food for two people across the border? I suspect it'll be cheaper bringing provisions from the U.S. than it is to buy it in Canada. We're both vegetarian, so we won't be bringing in any meat, if that helps.
Thanks!

no meat or fruit. If you have a pet - bring the original food bag. If it has beef they will take it away.

No fruit? Bummer.
Thanks for the first link! I was so close to finding it!
The closest thing to meat we're bringing is a veggie burger.

Actually, I think you can bring some fruits.
I know when crossing the border into the US, you can take apples, bananas, grapes.
What isn't allowed are the citrus with the peels and seeds, and the tropical fruits .. the worst I was informed, being leechi nuts.
One time we had a box of Japanese oranges with us, and they let us peel them and then take them, leaving the peels behind.
Speaking from lots of experience, seems if you tell them that you have certain fruits and being the ones allowable, just raises a red flag and you'll end up getting pulled over and having to go into secondary and wait for someone in agriculture to come and inspect what you have. This can take awhile sometimes .. grrrrr.
The people asking the questions sometimes, don't seem all too sure of what you can or can't take, so now we just don't take anything and buy once we get to our destination. A drag for sure, but beats getting pulled into secondary everytime for inspection.
And it's just not worth telling small fibs and hiding a little here or there. If they do pull you over and find you haven't been telling the truth, can make it pretty difficult and may not let you through?

Into MB, they'll probably let you bring anything. The only fruit that you can't bring in are anything that can be grown within the country. (Disease reasons) Since fruit isn't really a crop in MB, the customs person may let you bring it, but then again, they may not.
Isn't discretion fun?

I know from crossing into Mexico, produce was a no-no. And only a liter of booze is allowed, too.

Crossing land border points from CAN to US with more than a litre is rarely a problem, as long as it looks like it's for personal use. I always bring through a bunch of Canadian microbrews - always upfront about what I've got and they haven't batted an eyelid yet. Only plucked up the courage to do this after reading online that others had no difficulty doing it.
