Default As a canadian can I fly from inside the U.S from one state to another with no passport?

Hi all,

I am posting this here as some of you may relate...

I just found out this weekend that a friend of mine in the U.S needs someone to take care of his house and animals while he is away on vacation. He obviously offered this to me on short notice; he is leaving on April 19th so I would have to be there by then...

Thing is, I do not have a passport and with the huge bottleneck going on right now, there are delays all of you know about. I am going to the passport office here in Ottawa on Wednesday to submit my application and attempt to get it fast-tracked (hopefully my reason is good enough). If this fails, I will obviously not be allowed to fly to the U.S from Canada as the passport is required.

However, is it possible for me to cross the U.S border by land (yes, i can do this with my birtch certificate) and then fly out from N.Y to Florida where I need to be. Will I need to show a passport in this situation if I am already in the U.S and flying from one U.S destination to another U.S destination as a canadian citizen?

Sorry if this is unclear, I can attempt to clarify if needed.

Thank you for any feedback.

I sure don't think so. It's only shown or asked for at ports of entry into the country, for the moment as you said, by air or sea. You can drive across with current documentation and why not just drive down to Florida anyway and have the availability of your car with you?
Flying is a pain in the a$$ in my opinion and driving is much more fun...at least for me. I'm not quite sure of the distance from Ottawa to wherever you're going in Florida, and I assume you mean South Florida, but I drove to Missouri from Las Vegas in a day and a half. My butt hurt, but it was a great trip!

Hey MoMark,

Thanks for the reply! I already drove from Ottawa to Florida this winter, and I'm not sure I want to do it a second time (haha). This is a solo trip, i'll be on my own and it's roughly a 24 hour drive! I have a reliable car to do it, but I DON'T have cruise control!!!!!! and that was a KILLER back when we did it in December... We were also 3 doing rotating shifts.

I know what you mean. My butt had "Toyota" tatooed on it after my drive. I left about 6am and made it from Las Vegas to Amarillo, Texas the first day and it was dark when I got to Amarillo.
I left early the next morning just as the first inkling of morning began to shine and the morning dew there is amazingly thick, had to use my windshield wipers. Made it across the Texas Panhandle and through Oklahoma into Missouri and was in Springfield by 1pm
Just stay overnight in a cheap hotel with a decent bed somewhere halfway inbetween
