I'm in Quebec, don't know too much about Ontario, but here's my advice:
Some says the west Canada has better prospectives. I'd say that's dubious. Ontario and Quebec are the biggest and most 'powerful' provinces (don't wanna start a war here) where you can find almost any kind of job, good government services, good salaries, etc. For sure, Quebec has lower income rates but is cheaper in general. Wanna make money in Canada ? Go to Toronto for sure. Wanna work in oil and derivatives ? go to Alberta. Wanna be in a different kind in cities ? go to British Columbia. Wanna live in an european like city ? come to Montreal (but have to speak french if you wanna have a future

About getting a job in your area .... i'm not an specialist. I'm a computer programmer (immigrant) and i know about my area only. But if you're really looking into coming to live here i can tell you to go to this site: [url=http://www.payscale.com]PayScale - Salary Comparison, Salary Survey, Wages[/url] they might give you some guide about your perspectives for your experience/researched job position. And if wanna see some job sites go to monster.ca, workopolis.com and jobboom.com. This three should be quite enough to cover Ontario.
About your wife process that won't be any problem. Although nobody here, not even citizens, have the right to have your non canadian wife/husband here, in fact when a citizen/residents asks for his couple he/she will always get them. That other person should do a immigration process as family reunification and it won't be complicated.
Here we have free medical service (but we lack medics, sometimes you'll have to wait). A visit to urgency could take up to 10 hours (depends on the city for sure) if it's not a "real" urgency but kids and elderly's will always get to be attended in minutes. For sure, if it's something critical (cancer, aids, bleeding from the head), you'll get immediate attention. Depending on the province you'll get a plan for medicaments where you'll copay but with a limits (in Quebec it's CAD$ 78/month).
A rent in Toronto could cost $ 900 to $1200 heating not included. A college grad could get $35k/year which after taxes will be about 22k-26k per year. But a guy with experience should be able to make at least 45k (i mean you can get more for sure. You just need to convince the employer and prove it). Notice that here a medic/judge makes 120k/150k and they're the richest so keep in mind that 60/70 is a good salary and that that's way beyond that national average. Here the guys that make over 200 are politicians and lawyers.
That should give you some guidance about how it's all up here. Work employment situation ? i'd say it's ok. We've been worst (last year). Good luck.
