Really? What about the 1980 US Olympic Men's hockey team? The US won gold on home ice. "Miracle on Ice." Lake Placid, NY.
That's true and when I checked, their one other gold was also won on home ice - in 1960 in Squaw Valley - so I obviously misunderstood something about the TV announcer was saying!
Oi - scrolled back my TV and listened carefully - "no team has won gold on home soil since Team USA's Miracle on Ice in 1980." Winning on home soil would be a miracle LOL
"Own the podium" was Canada's goal to finish in the top three total medal count - and we did it! YEA!!!!!!! Canada has also won the most gold of any country at the 2010 winter games (total of 13 gold), and thus tied only two other countries that have won that many - the Soviet Union (in 1976) and Norway (in 2002).
This year, the next country with most golds is Germany with 10 golds, followed by the USA with 9. If Canada wins the gold tonight in men's hockey they will make history for having won the most golds of any country in the winter Olympics.
Against them in tonight's game:
-- History: unbelievably, no country has ever taken the men's hockey gold on home ice
-- The Competition: the USA wants it - baaaaad
-- Team USA is undefeated at 6 and 0 -- and has a kick-a$$ goalie
For them tonight:
-- History: we want to make it!! We want to be the first country to win men's gold on home ice.
-- Record-setting: we want to set a new record and win 14 golds!!
-- Team Canada is playing before a home crowd
-- Team Canada was only defeated once at the games (by the USA!)
All I can say, as I sit on the edge of my seat over here in the UK is GO CANADA!!!!!
This isn't the case. The US did it in 1960 and 1980.
Nevertheless, congratulations to Canada in one of the best hockey games I've ever watched.
Canada got off to a slow start, but they really did decently in the end - top three finish with most golds is certainly nothing to be ashamed of, to say the least. And winning in hockey is presumably a big point of national pride.
