OK, I'm not the one with brain cancer, but a very close family member is. It has metastasized to the brain from a bout of kidney cancer two years ago. It is inoperable due to the fact that surgery would leave this person, still a relatively young man, paralyzed or unable to speak.

Does anyone ever make it out alive once cancer takes up "court" in the brain? I am trying to decide whether or not to take a long leave of absence to spend some time with my brother, who is putting up a brave front, but I'm afraid, may be living out his last days. God, I HATE cancer.

I can't be any help re: medical/cancer. Maybe his doctor could give you a better answer in regards to his chances of improvement or a timeline of sorts? I just wanted t say I'm sorry about your brother....I hate cancer too.

You said inoperable, you didn't say untreatable. What are they doing?

Take your family member to a top notch brain tumor center such as Duke, MDAnderson, UCLa etc and get their opinion. For a list of major brain tumor centers see virtual trials.com. You can post questions on inspire.com and/or cancercompass.com. Both have active brain cancer message boards with very knowledgable people.

There is both radiation and chemo for brain cancer.

Renal Cell Carcinoma grows slowly and hence, they are not very sensitive to chemo. Radiation would be the way to go but the likely scenario is palliative use of radiation rather than curative therapy. That being said, they will very likely use biological agents such as Avastin or Sutent.

Your close family member needs to ask his or her Oncologist/Urologist these questions directly. Not even doctors in general field have much idea as it is a very specialized field. Much less strangers on the internet.

I'm so, so sorry about your brother. For sure, If I were you, I'd be taking that leave of absence.

Thank you for all of your responses. He had intensive, directed radiation to the spots on his brain two weeks ago. We will find out today whether it has been successful in killing the cancer cells.

My mom had Gamma Knife, which is that type of radiation. Four months later, the treatment was still working. Hope it helps in your case, too.

I have a cousin who has a brain tumor and he was the same as your brother--inoperable. He decided to go all holistic and is still alive and well about 20 yrs later. He still has the tumor but it hasn't grown. I have the same thing--a breast tumor that hasn't grown in the 1-1/2 yrs I've known about it. If a tumor doesn't grow it won't kill you. My cousin was the one who inspired me to do this.

Please let us know as soon as you have some news. I hope it is favorable. I don't want to use the word "positive" in fact on our church prayer chain we always pray for favorable results.

I have known a few people with brain cancer and some have lived longer than anyone would have hoped or thought. Cancer is something everyone hates, it wrecks so many lives and families. Most cancers can not be stopped or prevented. Yes, some are less likely if we live a clean life, don't smoke, etc, but there is no guarantees. Even lung cancer often hits people who one would never dreamed it would get them. Others do nothing to prevent it and still live to be 100 years old, never suffering from any form of cancer. It has hit our family, but luckily no one other than one of my husband's aunts. She was just a few weeks under 90 at the time.

I will add, as for anyone who chooses holistic, for every good story we hear, there are dozens of horror stories. I am sure some people really believe this can work, and who knows, maybe it does, but using traditional treatment is the only way I would want to go.

As most of us know, there are many outstanding cancer treatment centers throughout the United States,Anderson and UCLA for starters, but most mid sized metro areas also have great doctors and facilities. Choosing the top of the line is wonderful for those who can afford it. Even if ones insurance covers some of the costs, cancer treatment is very costly and relocating to an area for treatment is also costly.

Again, good luck to you, your brother and the family
