Has anybody here had a brain tumor, malignant or benign? How about a relative or friend or acquaintance with one?
I had a grand mal seizure on October 8th, 2009 and a MRI scan on the 10th (as the result of the seizure) which showed a large, contrast-enhancing mass in the eloquent (functional) region of my left frontal lobe. I was sent down from Duluth to Minneapolis for further diagnosis, and a surgery date of October 20th was scheduled. We drove down there early in the morning of the 20th. The surgery took about 8 hours. They were able to resect about 80% of it. The rest they couldn't get as they felt the risks (me losing my speech and motor function) would outweigh the benefits. I was in the hospital until the 23rd, when I was sent home. The diagnosis came later that month: a WHO Grade II Oligodendroglioma (try saying that five times fast!), with 1p / 19q deletions (a positive prognostic factor).
I recovered rather quickly, needing only a total of about 12-15 hours of speech, occupational, and physical therapy each. (They suggested inpatient speech therapy in the hospital!) My first visit to the local oncologist was awful, so we decided to see the specialist down in Minneapolis. This was about two and a half months afterwards. He told me that "these kind of tumors are treated, not watched", because my tumor enhanced on contrast and contained small regions of endovascular proliferation, an early sign of malignant transformation. He decided to put me on Temodar chemotherapy. The medications cost roughly $4,000 a month retail ($3,000 for the Temodar 250 mgs + $600 for the Temodar 20 mgs + $400 for the Zofran), but I in reality only pay about $12 / month for them, because I have the excellent MinnesotaCare state health insurance. I completed my first cycle on the 28th, and only managed to feel a little nauseated, and my weekly blood draws have been nothing but good. I'm hanging in and cherishing each day for the good it brings, or at least trying to cherish it. I do trust in God.
God be with both of you . My aunt had brain cancer at 69 and lived to be 75. She had it several years before she went to have her headaches checked . She may have beat it if they found it earlier . Her attitude as very good and she almost lived totally off yogurt, not saying that helped but thats all she would eat .
