For me, USAA is often very slightly higher than some other major insurance providers. I find the service worth the added cost.

My dad served WWII. I have no idea if he had USAA insurance or not. I was an infant when he went to war. I doubt it even existed then or under that name. They were extremely rude when I called to inquire.

USAA was founded in the 20's. Supprised that they were rude. You must have caught a bad moment.

I think their service quality/pricing has dropped over the last 10 or so years. Some said this was because they over-expanded a bit. I believe it was originally only opened to officers, then all military (?). Their banking products are now now open to non-military customers as well. Of course, I don't know their operating structure, so the banking and insurance products may be managed separately. But I have noticed that they aren't as good as they used to be. But that's relative. They are still much better than any other insurance company I've dealt with.

My wife (who I qualified through) tells me that when they used to get phone solicitations from insurance companies, they would tell them they are with USAA. Upon hearing that, the caller would typically say 'oh, thanks' and hang up.

Interesting revival of a nearly four year old thread.

Among those of us who have had an insurance career, USAA always had a good reputation. I always wanted to work at their home office, but nothing ever came along that fit my skill set which was a combination of personal lines underwriter/company sales rep/ratemaker/compliance officer. I was a great asset for smaller companies that needed diverse experience but a less desirable candidate for larger companies which tend to have specialists. My only major company was Travelers in the early to mid seventies.

But USAA has a terrific campus for its thousands of home office employees. I remember reading once that besides the office cafeteria there were six other food service outlets ranging from a snack bar to a sit down restaurant.

Another company I never worked for but think highly of is Amica. Amica is one of the few remaining owner owned mutual companies----what State Farm was in the beginning. Every policy holder who "opts in" is an equal shareholder in the company and has a right to vote on certain issues facing the company.

Opting in might mean your premiums are five to ten percent higher, but if the company does well in the year they give money back in the form of dividends. The number of years one remains with the company means higher and higher dividends over time. It can cut a third off the cost of your insurance (at least in the old days).

The other reason to choose a mutual company is that those are not for-profit companies. There is not the same level of pressure within such a company to "cheat." And, oh boy howdy, do insurance companies like to find ways to skirt following state laws. Eventually I left the industry while making a $100,000 in my last year to take a job as a medical records clerk making $11.00 per hour. But I slept better. I had begun to realize my job was turning into being the person who told senior management it was okay to do this or forget about doing that, so if they ever got caught in an illegal activity my head would be the one to roll in order to protect them.

That's not as likely in a company not looking for profit. It happens when the bigger the net income equals a bigger bonus check for senior management.

I checked on USAA several years ago to see what their rates would be since my FIL was a Veteran, so I thought we should qualify. I found out we could join for the banking products, but not get insurance since he did not actually have an insurance policy with them before he died. So the family military connection did not work for us.

It started as USAAA in the 20's by a group of Army Officers who had difficulty getting insurance because of their careers...

They have proven themselves several times since 1984 with our family. When we have had a problem, damaged cars and homes, they were concerned and helped get the issues corrected. Cheap insurance which takes their time to respond, figures out how to not pay, etc is not what I care to go through.
