By comparing to Umbrella Insurance, the amount of auto insurance is much lower.

I agree to have a relatively high amount of auto insurance if no Umbrella Insurance.

My insurance company requires a set minimum level of insurance before an umbrella policy can apply.

Usually, an insurance company will require you purchase limits of either $100,000/$300,000 or $250,000/500,000 before you may purchase umbrella coverage extending those limits.

The reason is that umbrella coverage is cheap because the umbrella policy only has to pay out in a handful of "large loss" cases. If the prerequisite is a policy of $250,000/$500,000 than the umbrella policy does not come into play until a claim is worth more than $250,000 for a single individual. Since only a handful of claims are worth that amount, umbrella policies can be sold fairly cheaply.

When I was shopping for umbrella policy, a few of the ones I look at requires at least $300K on the current policy to get the $1mil Umbrella.

I think you need to talk to YOUR insurance agent to find out what YOUR insurance company will do or will require.

Umbrella policies have requirements that are known in the industry as "underlying coverage". My insurer requires Auto coverage of at least 250/500/100 and that my Homeowners policy have $500k Liability.

Personal Umbrella policies are very inexpensive from most companies. One of the reasons is because the high levels of coverage on the underlying policies that will cover that vast majority of claims. By requiring those high limits, there is a much lower chance of the Umbrella policy having to pay.

One thing to keep in mind, even with high Auto and Homeowners limits, is that an Umbrella will cover you in situations that those policies might not. They vary by company and by state, but the Umbrella can cover things that are otherwise not covered at all.

This right here^^^. I changed insurances and this one requires 250/500. My last one required 500/500
