I've also been an USAA member for well over two decades and from the times I needed to deal with them for insurance claims they were top notch. For a few dollars more a month, it's worth it to know that your claims will be handled quickly. Peace of mind has a cost.

Just think of the alternative. In every scenario where you have to file an insurance claim, quickness and professionalism is going to save the claimant time and money, over and over. If you save money on the front end with a lower tier company, you will most likely lose most of your savings if your claim is slow to process and a big headache to wrap up.

It's a long winded story but USAA was very transparent about the process and reasoning. It also didn't get totaled until it was being torn apart for repairs which is when it was noticed the thief damaged the floor board and impact bars.

We were in a rental for SO LONG, we were so miserable. We now have a larger than our sized car for rental under our policy. It feels the "real world" version of compact and the "rental world" version of compact vary slightly, lol. There was no issue for our rental car from 09/18/17 through 10/17/17.

It was a lot of lessons in insurance, totaling out a car, and much more. We didn't pay a dime though. Our comprehensive deductible is $0 and it was a comprehensive claim. Took awhile to total out the car so we had to make a payment on it when it wasn't in our possession but gap insurance kicked in shortly after and paid it off.

We are in Chicago and require a street permit to park overnight and didn't have any when our car was stolen as our permit was integrated into our city sticker. So that was a lesson learned. We also cancelled our Sirius and toll pass.
