Single guy in my 30s, sparkly clean driving record, home owner, and up to 5 vehicles right now, and 2 more to be put on the road later this year, but 6 of those might only see 1,000 miles a year, if that. At least two can sit for months at a time without being used, but when I need them, I need them RIGHT NOW so dropping/adding insurance as needed is a bit inconvenient.

I've Googled private fleet insurance, but get a ton of hits for commercial fleets, which doesn't apply to me, along with some hits for UK insurance companies, which isn't going to do me much good here in the USA. Just seems silly to have separate policies on half a dozen vehicles I barely drive, but still paying a decent chunk of change for every year to keep them legal.

I hope you can appreciate how unusual your situation is. How many people drive six or seven separate vehicles? If you are having difficulty finding the right insurance situation I cannot say I am surprised.

Are you checking with private insurance agents? Or, do you believe you can do everything in life over the internet? I don't mean to sound nasty. But, I do run into people who will not accept the notion. An independent insurance agent in a brick and mortar building is probably your best shot at solving this problem.

I don't think he's all that unusual.

Rather than a "Private Fleet," it seems OP is more of a collector. And certainly plenty of hobbyists have found a way to insure their vehicle collections. In the Midwest and Northeast, they may only insure them in the summer, but plenty of the rest of the country doesn't. It wouldn't be unusual to have a truck, commuter car, and a few collector cars.

Another responder referred to collector cars. Collector car insurance might be the way to go on some of them.

I can give you more information when you do this:

List them here.
Year, make, model.
What you use them for when you do use them.
Where you store them when not in use.

Most insurance companies have a limit to the number of cars that can be on one policy. For example, Liberty Mutual has a 6-car limit whereas Safeco has a 4-car limit.

If you have a lot of cars, you might want to consider Chubb as an insurer. Chubb has no limit to the number of cars or type of cars. Liberty Mutual, for example, won't insure Ferraris but Chubb will.

What kind of cars are you collecting?

They're not collectors, at least not in the traditional sense.

I have a Suzuki Samurai that is an off road play toy that literally never sees pavement and is trailered everywhere, but I maintain license plates and insurance on it as many of the access roads to the trails around here are legally considered to be just like any other main road.

There's a Ford F350 that I only use as a tow rig for the trailers, campers, or any time I need to move something that's too big or dirty/oily/greasy/etc for the other vehicles. Such as an old engine that I'm not putting in the back of the Blazer or Cadillac. Then there's the '59 International 2.5 ton truck with a 12 foot flatbed that's for anything that's too big for the Ford. At the time of this post I also had a Suzuki Vitara and Pontiac Fiero, that are now both gone. I recently put a Chevy Blazer full size back on the road as a general purpose off road toy that could be driven to/from the trails in air conditioned comfort. I also have a '65 Volvo that's been a long term project that will eventually be a weekend cruiser.

Sure, the Volvo would qualify for collector car insurance, but both the Samurai and Blazer are heavily modified off road toys. Assuming the lift and big tires wouldn't disqualify it, the Blazer is a clean bodied truck, and might be able to be put on a collector policy, but every body panel on the Samurai has taken some damage off road. I have zero intentions of fixing that, as they'll just get damaged on the next trail run anyways. My real concern with most of these isn't collision or vandalism type damage, but rather being covered in the event they disappear one day.

The other side is that the Ford and International are very low use vehicles. It's probably been 6 months since I last drove the International somewhere, and the Ford might get driven once a month. So it's like tacking on another $100 every time I drive the International just for insurance costs if I leave the insurance on it all year.

Don't know where you are, but my wonderful state allows what is called an "Operator Policy", where you as a driver are insured, anything you drive, yours or not, for the required minimum coverage. Just don't wreck your car. It's not covered.

It's great! I've currently got 18 cars and a dozen or so motorcycles.

There are some very nice advantages to this. But I won't go into that here...

One company that sells them is Dairyland. But you need to check with your state, first, to see if it's cool with them.

Hey, urbex, What kind of Volvo do you have? Wouldn't be a P1800, would it?

I've seen those operator policies before, and everything I've read on them is that they're intended for those who don't own a car but will still be driving anyways. Plus, it doesn't seem to negate the legal need to have the vehicles themselves insured with liability policies.

I've said for years that the whole idea of having individual liability policies on vehicles is insane, as I can't drive two vehicles at once anyways. Collision/comprehensive on each vehicle, sure, but not the liability aspect.

As for the Volvo, to be honest..I'm not sure. There's a guy at work here with it, that's stored at another guy's house, who wants it gone. I just have to go pick it up one day, and that's dependent on me getting off my lazy butt to clear my trailer off, lol. We never really talked about it much, he just heard me one day lamenting the loss of my 850, and asked if I was interested in an old Volvo that needed to be put together. No cost, just go get it. The pictures he showed me looks kind of like the P1800...I'll have to ask him next time I see him.

Talk to an independent insurance agent. I don't think your needs are all that unique.

I also agree that Chubb might be a good option, but I would suggest finding an independent insurance agent in your area that represents many different carriers. Your situation is not that unique. You will find a carrier!
