When I was with Auto-Owners, they have 12-month policies and if you pay in full they give you a discount, I think I got $125 or so off if I paid in full for the year long policy.

I now have USAA and they have 6-month policies. I sort of liked the 12-month policy with the discount if you pay in full. Like others have mentioned, with 6-month polices the chance of raises could be more frequent than a 12-month policy.

Just so you know, USAA quoted me $1291 for 6 months against my progressive premium of $745. State Farm was in the $850 range.

You may have been able to do a better. Think about that when your renewal comes up.

Is that for one car? Our State Farm just paid was $515 for our 2020 Outback, $487 for the 2017 F50. That is with increases due to our state banning discounts for good credit score. I have gotten other quotes, all much higher.

$745 is for three vehicles (6 months). My 2020 Challenger for Liability, Comprehensive, and Collision. An old truck and car for just liability.

State Farm quoted me $856 (6 months) for the same coverage with an option of $818 (6 month) if I went with the Drive Safe & Save monitoring program that promises lower rates on renewal.

I declined because I had already been burned by Progressive with its promise of lower rates after using their monitoring devices for 6 months. I aced the program but still ended up with $100 increase. Progressive's response - companywide increases ate up the discounts that I earned.

These next 18 months will be a bloodbath.
We got two vehicles for $234 for 6 months. How they calculated that not sure but we didn't ask questions and we could not find any company that could even come close on the premium.
What increase do you think we will get upon 6 month renewal?
Progressive Policy Number: 9xxxxxx94
Payment Date: 01/01/2022
Amount: $234.00

Your 7/1 renewal might have already reached you.

How much of an increase did you get?

My typo error. The policy began Feb. 1 (end August 1) not January so Progressive should be getting us a renewal notice some time early next month.

My Progressive renewal is 8/10 but I'm not waiting around for it as I expect another increase.

My homeowners for 6/28 increased another $300 without the multi policy discount.

I am able to get one year policies for home and auto as of 6/28 and I'll cancel the Progressive policy.

Which answers the question about one year vs 6 months. I've been getting outrageous quotes from about a dozen carriers, either for 6 months or one year for both auto and homeowners.

A company called Amshield, through a local independent agent, beat the pants off of everybody else and I'll be happy not to bother with this for a year.

Last 6 months for 2 vehicles was $234. The renewal is $257 and increases are almost guaranteed so 9.8% is fine for now. We can re-evaluate in January.

With my homeowners up June 28 I started getting quote about the first week of June. When all was said and done Pekin was out of the running because of the outrageous auto quote and the homeowners was another $300 without the auto/home discount.

Amshield (independent agent) came in with the lowest price on the home and cars.
$683 annual on the homeowners.
$1547 annual on the auto (one car full coverage, 2 with just liability).

State Farm (direct writer) came in second.
$797 annual on the homeowners.
$876 six months on the auto using their Drive Safe and Save monitoring program.

I was all set to go with Amshield when I learned that there would be a dog liability exclusion because I have a Pit Bull. No thanks. Wasn't an issue with State Farm.

I bought the State Farm policies both effective June 28 and cancelled the Progressive. Got $177 back.

I'll report back after 6 months regarding that monitoring program.

The other thing I did at the beginning of June was apply for two new credit cards. Each with a $200 cash back sign on bonus. One for spending $500 and the other for spending $750. Each policy has an additional $200 discount and I'll pay the bills in full when they come in.

I might do that for insurance renewals going forward.
