He has secondary insurance, very good insurance.
I am so surprised, he went in at 4:30 and is back out already. They called saying he only had the hip surgery as Doc started changing his mind about doing both at the same time. He is doing ok
He's been paying for it since June. I am just thinking he'll need to pay more because it seems someone with some medical training should be there with him, not just the typical caregivers he already has. He has 24 hr caregivers but didn't need 24 hr caregivers.
Well I guess you could say he did need it since she is who found him on the floor at 4am but until then, he walked around just fine.

Not just medical training, he is going to need physical therapists and I don't know if the kind of physical therapy he is going to need can be accomplished in a home setting.
I really am just guessing, but I think he will need the use of physical therapy equipment only available at a facility.
If that is the case, I don't know if it would be feasible to transport him back and forth from home everyday.
I really don't think he is going to be able to come straight home.
One thing about being in a LTC facility for rehab, it will give him incentive to do the therapy so he can get well enough to go home.
Amazingly, depending on what needed to be done with each joint, he may not be in as bad of shape as some predict.
I am not going to guess, but will say that there are types of surgery done now that weren't common even a couple years ago.
Home health may fill the gaps between what the person and what family and friends do. Not everyone needs rehab. And many need only a couple weeks anymore.
You need to ask your insurer to provide skilled care at home daily until he is ambulatory if he is discharged to home. If he spent 3 days in the hospital he is entitled to skilled nursing care after discharge for a month or more.

Thanks everyone. He is doing well and will be transferred to a skilled nursing facility tomorrow. With excellent insurance, he won't have to pay anything. They are even going to transport him to the facility

This sounds good.
My FIL broke his hip and had to have surgery to repair it, at age 80. Actually, it wasn't such terrible surgery - it was a small scar and they started him on physical therapy almost immediately. But he did have to have the PT in a skilled nursing facility, a rehab center actually. It was pretty intensive and every day and for a few weeks he was in pretty significant pain.
Good luck! Keep us posted. This is a big blow to your FIL's overall health so I wish your family good luck with this. I hate to say it, but if he recovers, he will be the exception rather than the rule - not to say he can't recover because he can, but this is a serious blow for him.

Sorry I didn't see this until now. I don't know what kind of insurance he has, he worked for the County for years.
