Hello,
I'm wondering if there is such a thing as a half-way house for recovering alcoholics that are trying to dry out?
Thank you

The only ones I've heard of are for people who are already sober. Sober Living/Halfway Houses.

BUT this link says some take you when you WANT to sober up.

As it states, being not sober upon entry an be dangerous because they aren't medical facilities, though.

Halfway House

If you're trying to dry out, you aren't recovering. You're drunk. Try jail. That should help sober someone up.

If you're trying to dry out, that's for rehab, and most have either inpatient for a number of days, oroutpatient services where you go in first thing in the morning for six hours, and then leave for the rest of the day. Maybe going to meetings at night too.

In my area, there is one place you go for an initial assessment to decide if you need inpatient or outpatient. Usually you don't go to the halfway house if you're outpatient.

There are sober living residences around my town and they do have their own AA meetings on site. Do IT....

The simple answer is yes. But there are different places for different stages and of course things vary by state also. I knew someone so severe he had to do medical detox first whereas some rehabs will do that part too.

Of course, not everyone is going to need medical detox, thank goodness.

Just a caution: please do not ever try to do detox alone. The risk of 1 or more seizures (and potentially, a fall, etc.) is too great. If a rehab place has supervised detox, that's fine. But trying to do it alone is dangerous. I realize the OP is not asking about this, but since detox came up, I feel obligated to remind people that it should not be attempted alone. Sadly, we had a recent reminder about this: https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/...autionary-tale

Sober living facilities will take recently sober clients, but not ones who are still drinking. They are very strict and won't tolerate any relapse because there are multiple residents trying to stay clean.

There are also sometimes extended stay recovery programs that provide shelter but you have to be very serious about staying sober.

The Salvation Army is probably your best bet.

Good luck to you
