Why "Dang!"? Again: why should TAXPAYERS have to pay for your mother's care when she has her own asset that could be used?
They do take any pensions or SS or other funds she is receiving. You have to turn over bank account info etc.

All has to go to the home via direct deposit.

They are given a stipend of about 60 dollars a month after that.

So they are not there totally free.

What is wrong with asking the doctor? Sometimes they might think the family doesn't want that for their elderly relative.

Medicaid would not take the SS checks. The nursing home would.

Agreed. And I think most of us agree with this. I think the people that are not knowledgeable about the subject and have to deal with it all of a sudden, well, it's not what they were expecting so they try to find a way around it.

It's not. It's a co-insurance fee that increases each year. It's not a percentage. People can calculate their costs in advance and KNOW how much it will be for a day or a week or a month, if it comes to that. That was my point. And if you have no supplemental, then you are on the hook for the rest. Even if you DO have a good supplemental, it may not pick up all of the rest. My parents had an excellent supplemental policy and were still on the hook for 12k when they released her to go home (against my wishes but my parents did not want to pay anything more, and my mom was bound and determined to go home even though she was not ready.) Of course she went home, stayed a week, took the wrong medication and nearly died, wound up back in the hospital and in rehab, AGAIN, but this was a new benefit period, thank God.
I've been in rehab in SNFs for 24 years, and we have always referred to a percentage. I'm not trying to argue but that is how we explain it to people. The amount may still change if they change the daily reimbursement rate for rehab. That $185.50 is most likely 20% of the current daily Medicare reimbursement rate for rehab. I agree it's helpful to know the number, though.

"Medicare pays 100% of the bill for the first 20 days. Days 21 – 100 Medicare pays for 80%. It is the patients’ responsibility to pay the balance or supplemental insurance will pay if the patient has it."

I don't know why your parents owed so much. The only time my mom owed anything from a rehab stay was when she had an Advantage plan, and when we switched her to traditional plus a supplemental, it wasn't even a top tier supplemental but they picked up after day 20.

I'm sorry for your loss.

Yes, my mon is on Medicaid now in an assisted living. She gets her SS check plus a small pension direct deposited into her own account that I have POA for. Every year, Medicaid determines how much toward the assisted living bill my mother has to pay based on her income, minus $110 a month that she is allowed to keep. They send me a letter informing me of the amount, based on the form I fill out each year to re-qualify her. This year we owe the assisted living $1707.00 a month. The assisted living sends me a $9,000.00+ bill, and I send them $1707.00 from her account. So, no one is really taking it, I am using her SS check to pay her rent at the assisted living.

If there is no POA, the check goes right to the home, and they open an account for the resident for the monthly amount the resident is allowed to keep. The resident can spend it how they want. If it is someone with dementia, the home will have to use it to buy something for the resident before the account exceeds $2,000, because Medicaid patients can't have more than $2000 in assets (the Covid stimulus payments are not counted, however). So they'll buy the resident clothes, a power wheelchair or whatever is appropriate that they can use.

Thank you.
They owed because the supplemental did not cover the entire balance after Medicare. Their BCBS supplemental did pay for a lot, I will say. Mom was in the hospital for a total of 86 days, and rehab for a total 100 days. In and out of both...back and forth. The 12k they owed was not for any hospital care, it was all for rehab. I ran the numbers when they got the bill, and it was correct.

Thanks for posting those details. I know it will help a lot of people here looking for information on this.
