The issue with the house I'm staying in right now (for part of the summer) is that it's all open--no doors to the bedroom. It is loft-style, the bedroom looking over the living room like a big balcony. He (Sunny) sits in the living room below/next to us, looks up, and howls. Originally I thought it was a howl like he was looking for a girlfriend, but now that it's been almost two weeks since he got neutered I don't think that's the reason anymore. Also I know he calms down if I go downstairs to babysit him. He's not interested in toys--seems too "mature" and unamused.
There's also no door to the basement, where he originally spent a lot of time. I don't want to punish him, anyway.
I'm already giving him and his sister each 1/4 can wet food and 1/2 cup dry food per day. I hope this is enough and he's not starving. Not sure if this is a factor here at all. Again, once I sit with him he calms down so it appears not to be the food.
Wow, sounds a lot like our cat Fred. I have 3 cats and Fred, who is 3.5 years old ruled the roost as soon as he moved in. My other cats are 8 and 9 years old. I bet your cat just wants attention, just as Fred has wanted for the past 3.5 years of owning him. I think I've had maybe 5 full nights of sleep since we got him. He cries and cries and howls every night until you wake up. Then he's so happy he rubs up against the door. I go to the kitchen to feed him some dry food (b/c I can't leave any out b/c I have a fat cat) and then I try to go back to bed. What happens next you ask? Fred still cries...I then proceed to go in to the kitchen and give him a scoop of wet food. Sometimes it ends there but often times...not. Then he will try to get into my husbands closet door, then my bathroom door...after this and being up at 3:00 AM for an hour, I put him in his pet crate with a few toys and close the 2nd bedroom door. I did this last night and he howled for another half hour. Finally, I just couldn't take it anymore, I let him out and then I guess he finally went to sleep.
I hope you don't have such an annoying cat. In his first year of living with us as a kitten, I cannot tell you how much he kept me up during the night. There were nights I had no sleep & had to call into work sick...that's how bad it was. I must say, he is a very interesting kitty and the most social...and a cool cat, wants to eat dog treats, etc. but otherwise, during the night...he's a pain in the butt! Oh yeah another one of his great habits... he used to pee in the bathroom sink. Ugh, I hated that one. He would do that during the day whenever he felt like it. He also will tear up toilet paper, shred our paper towels and do whatever else he must to get our attention if he is crying. He's a friendly and amusing cat but can really wear a person down. He's the most neediest cat I've ever had. I hope your new kitty is not like that. Good luck. My suggestion, try not to give in. We feel b/c we gave in, this is why he's so spoiled.
