One of my cats has recently started crapping right in front of the litter box. She is almost 10 years old, but this just started a month or so ago. I clean the thing twice a day, I have tried disciplining her, praising her when she does go inside the box, nothing has worked. I don't know what else I can do aside from kenneling her every time I leave the room. Anyone have any suggestions?

Yes, take her to the vet. We had a similar situation with our fifteen year old cat. Our vet told us that sometimes, if a cat has some pain while pooping, she associates the pain with the litter box and will not use it. A change in diet solved the problem for us.

I will second the need for a trip to the vet. Sudden inappropriate bathroom behavior is almost always an indicator of any underlying health concern.

Unless you have recently changed the brand litter or placement of the box, or type of box.....Vet check. Discipline is useless and uncalled for at this point.

Be sure to feed a grainless meat based canned or raw food diet, this should help.

My 15-year-old cat doesn't always make it to the box. It isn't the end of the world.

I don't think what the cat eats has much to do with defecating in front of the box. But I don't want to rain on your standard parade, PP.

Actually diet plays a very important part.

If a cat is constipated he will blame the box for pain, and avoid the box. Special diet can help constipation issues, and help kitty return to using the box.

This kitty needs a vet visit, with blood work for a senior profile, checking organ function and thyroid. Arthritis may be the culprit (again, pain while pooping, blames the box) or kidney disease, both causes of constipation.

Yes...buy the cat a litter box that she / he enters from the top. That way the cat has to enter the box to do it's business.
