I have another thread, Moved and lost kitty. We recently moved into our new home, ds left the front door open the first night, one of our cats escaped, its been over 2 weeks, we've given up hope of finding him again.
Just tonight, I found the front door open again, and, another kitty is missing! Perhaps this one will have a better chance of finding her way home, since she has been here almost 3 weeks, and noe probably feels this is her home. We are doing a door-to-door search, I don't care what time it is, or what the neighbors "think". Flyers are being printed as I type.
In our previous home, we had an alarm system, I could tell at a glance if a door or window was open, and heard a chime if a door was open. I didn't realize how much I depended on that until we moved here, no alarm, and I have no real idea if doors or windows are open. We're just renting, but we might install an alarm at our expense just for our use and safety.
Meanwhile, just WTH am I supposed to do about ds? He's obviously living on his own planet, can't think to shut a door behind him. I'm sick about losing my kitties! Not to mention the danger he exposes us all to with doors open and unlocked.
Maybe ds needs to get a place of his own before you're visited by some maniac. How does someone forget to close a door when they leave the house these days?

He's 13, he can't "get a place of his own"
He also "forgets" to close the door when he gets out of the car, just waltzes off, and "forgets" to flush the toilet.
he has ADHD, but I dont' buy that as an excuse. When you endanger the safety and well-being of others, you don't just make excuses.
Meanwhile, I insist all the windows be kept open, perhaps macrame will smell her way back. Scent is her best friend right now. Oh, the complaints, its so hot outside. Well, how do you think Macrame feels?
You keep the kitties locked up in cages because the ds can't close a door?
How many do you have left?
Mackie came back!
We kept the other kitties locked up so we could keep the doors and windows open. Fortunately, Mackie wasn't far, smelled her home and came back in through the front door. Tomorrow I'm investigating an alarm for this place, at least that way I will know when a door is being opened.
Have yoy considered a self closing device for the doors? Just like a child around water, it only takes a few seconds for a cat to escape. Your problem isn't going to be solved by an alarm, you need the doors to close, no if ands or buts.
GLad she's back and hopefully the other one will follow suit. In the meantime, would get them microchipped and make sure they're wearing collars w/ current ID info on tags etc - even having the word 'Reward' printed on it might motivate someone to contact you (it doesn't have to be a huge reward).
Marylee, I'm sorry but I have to say it. It would be great if you could focus some of the love, affection and respect you feel for your cats onto your children. They need it too.
I apologize mods if this is in violation of the TOS, but I can't keep quiet any longer.
