Thank you all for your input. I truly appreciate it and I'm so sorry to hear the stories from everyone who has recently gone through something similar. I should clarify- she is on a glucosamine supplement, it just hasn't seemed to help much. I've used glucosamine before with horses and I do know that it takes some time in the system before you see a result, so I'm still a bit optimistic. As far as her kidneys are concerned, I have taken her to three different vets in the past year for their opinions. They each have done bloodwork on her (4 times total this year), and her levels have been consistently off- each vet has suggested that we continue to test her and monitor the situation for the time being. Its just gotten to the point where each time we do bloodwork it stresses her out and she hides for two days after, and I'm just not hearing anything new each time. I think I've gotten to the point where I just want her to be comfortable. I'm not super interested in prolonging her life as I am with making her more comfortable while she is here. I'll make a note to ask her vet about kidney medications though.
You have truly put me at ease with your replies. I do know my cat really well at this point obviously. I was worried that I would be so concerned with losing her that I would overlook the signs that she is suffering. I'm just going to continue to enjoy my time with her for now! Thank you for all of your kind words.
This brings tears to my eyes. I know how hard this is as I, too, have lived through it. My almost 18 year old little buddy had to be put down in January. He had hypothyroidism for the last 5 years of his life and slowly lost weight. While we never knew why, we suspected cancer of some sort.
I really feel that not only do they tell you when they are ready...they also have to hear you say it is okay to let go. I was going through some things the last year or so of Mason's life and I really think he stuck around to be with me. The last couple days of his life I told him it was okay...that I loved him and would miss him terribly, but that I would be alright.
Sheesh...this is hard stuff. But know that you are not alone.
