A little over 2 months ago, I adopted Daina from the SPCA. (I posted photos of her on here). She is approximately 5 years old. I got her several months after my Orea died, so I've always had a 3-cat household. Astra is 14, and Cashew is 5. I did the acclimating process properly, keeping new kitty Daina in the bathroom for several days, then cracking the door open so they could see each other, etc. After 2 weeks, Daina came out and had the run of the house. Cashew is not fond of her, but will tolerate her presence. She'd growl and hiss in the beginning, but there were no major altercations between them. It is Astra I am worried about. Daina goes after her relentlessly, to the point where Astra has taken up residence on the kitchen stove. If Daina sees her move, she attacks her- it is NOT playing. Poor Astra has to sneak around while Daina is sleeping to eat and use the litter box. Astra is a sweet, loving cat, and I feel so bad for her. At her age she shouldn't have to constantly be fleeing for her life! I have been putting Daina in the bathroom a few hours each day so poor Astra & Cashew could have some peace. I was hoping after 2 months things would improve, but they are not. I fear Daina needs to be in a home where she is the only cat. She is a sweet cat who adores people. Does anyone have any input or ideas? I'd hate to have to find a new home for Daina, but it would be only fair for all three to have a good quality of life.

I'm sorry to hear they're not all getting along. Have you tried Bachs Rescue Remedy? I've never used it yet but a lot of posters on here have used it with success. This sounds like a good situation to try it. Don't give up! There are a lot of great cat parents on here to lend advice and support.

Also that Feliway stuff is supposed to work, too. It is an electric thingie like Glade that dispenses calming cat pheromones.

We had, and still have a scaled down version of this problem. My 15 lb. males gets nasty with our newest 10 lb female but not our oldest little 8 lb female. The difference seems to be how the 10 lb. tiger reacts to the brut. My 8 lb. will not put up with his crap and he knows it. What seems to be happening now is that the youngest one has learned from the older female to stand up for herself and now things have come down a few notches but when he leave the house, we always leave one of them in a closed bedroom. More toys is sometimes helpful to keep their energy levels a little lower after some play. When the brut goes outside for a few hours he is far less interested in chasing his housemate. I couldn't decide who should go, or stay, so here we are, just a typical three cat household with all its problems and joys! They are behaving according to their nature.

Maybe tried putting vanilla extract on each cat near base of their tail so they'll all smell the same?

This probably won't work, but I'll give it a shot. When we were bonding our rabbits (and rabbits are very fiesty), we put them in a stressful situation together to bond. It actually worked. Maybe take them for a carride together with their carriers side by side, what finally worked with our bunnies is that we put them in a laundry basket together and basically gave them an airplane ride together. Our bunnies are inseparable now.

Well, I read up on Bach's Rescue Remedy. I am a great skeptic when it comes to holistic approaches, but when I reviewed several web sites, the great majority of people noticed results, either with their pets or themselves. So I took a chance and ordered some, finding a good deal for under $7. I figured $7 is worth a try! It DOES seem to help! I used it on Astra and Daina (Cashew doesn't seem to have a need for it). Although Astra is still cautious, she is calmer and is more apt to come down off the stove, and even played with her toys. Altercations have diminished, and Daina seems to be less aggressive. I don't think I'm imagining! With my job as it's been, maybe I should try it myself! :-)
