This has gone on far too long. I think you need a second opinion and maybe a cat specialist. You're going to have these problems until they are solved. Seeking a second opinion may just help for a step in the right direction.

J-City, my 7 mo old foster kitten still has diarrhea...going on 5 weeks now. She was on Flagyl twice and took one dose of Drontal and still no improvement. My other foster 8 mo old kitten caught whatever it is, too, so it has to be a bug of some kind. We still haven't gotten the cure though.

I am waiting to hear from the vet as to what to try next. It is very frustrating to find little kitty poop paw prints everywhere on my furniture along with a litter box that looks like a poo monster stepped inside and had a fit each morning. It's a pain isn't it?

Good luck with your kitten. I feel your pain, LOL.

Default Best Dry Food for Kitten Diarrhea

Moderator cut: merged thread
Before everyone jumps all over me, I know wet food is better than dry. And if he weren't having the diarrhea I would take the dry food away, but since he is having diarrhea I want him to be eating (and drinking) as much as possible. I don't want to take food away from him.

But the dry food is the only thing I haven't changed, so I'm wondering if I should try a different dry food? Maybe a dry food that's especially gentle on the stomach? Does anyone know of one? And do you all think it matters that sometimes he eats my other kitty's adult blue buffalo food? Can adult food irritate a kitten's stomach (even if it's the same brand)?

Yes it is incredibly frustrating! And I'm pretty much on an every day mopping schedule! Nontoxic kitten wipes are friends! Aww these poor kittens. Have you tried probiotics sprinkled in the wet food? This has helped in the past but not this time.

There are 5 vets at the clinic and my vet discussed Fritz with the other vets. One of the other vets has been practicing for 20 years and specializes in cats. I appreciate you all saying I should go to another vet but I'm hesitant to throw money at this and see a vet I don't even know. I trust that these vets are capable and know what they're doing. Especially since my vet said she's been reading articles on kitten diarrhea to see if there's something she's missing. I know she's as frustrated as I am. She did mention that it could be FIP, but she wanted to rule out everything else first. She said it's difficult because there's no concrete test for FIP. I've been reading about it and it sounds like it's basically a death sentance, I really hope this isn't what he has.

So the only thing I haven't tried is changing Fritz's dry food. I know wet food is better for him but with his diarrhea I'm not going to take food away from him; I want him to be eating as much as possible. I'm feeding blue buffalo kitten food right now and he sometimes eats Cooper's BB adult food. Is there a dry food that is especially gentle on the stomach?

The food itself may be causing the diarrhea -- allergies, sensitivity or even undisclosed production/contamination issues can result in GI issues. There are a lot of user posts & info re cat & dog foods here: Itchmo Forums for Cats & Dogs - Index . Itchmo was the "point guy" for getting info out during the recalls of '07, and the forums have remained active. The PetFoodList site also has user forums and it keeps current with new recalls: The Pet Food List Forums - Index .

Keeping paws crossed that all poopy fuzz-butts are soon back to normal!

Our kitten had coccidia. She was dewormed, but this test had never been performed. The stinky gas and chronic diahrrea are now gone. It required only a fecal test to diagnose it.

Fritz has had 3 fecals and all came back negative for parasites.

After completing the worming drugs, fecal + for roundworm, here's what we are doing now, J-City. The vet has both kittens on a third round of Flagyl for 10 days, twice a day doses of Forti-Flora nutritional supplement, 1/8 teaspoon of Pacreazyme powder, and i/d perscription diet wet and dry. We just started these drugs and food diet so we will see. The poor (literally) rescue group has spent over $700 on these two kittens so far...

The kittens seem happy and active, aside from the diarrhea. Is Fritz still acting normally?

OK so here's the scoop on Fritz: we think he had a solid poop this morning!!!!!!!! *cheers and dances* It looked a tad big to be his poop but the SO said he was positive that Fritz pooped in this particular litter box and that was the only poop. This is his most solid poop to date!! A moment of silence please to commemorate the occasion!

He's been eating the chicken and rice with a teaspoon of yogurt and lately he's been trying to eat Cooper's natural balance wet food. So I hope I'm not tempting fate but I mixed a little of the natural balance wet food in with his chicken and rice. I know nutritionally he's not getting everything he needs being on the chicken and rice long term so hopefully it will be good for him.

texan2yankee: he's been acting normally, he's been playing and being a kitten. A third round of flagyl? Does it eventually work the longer you give it? That seems strange to me. But I'm all for trying everything... obviously! Fritz is still on the azithromycin for now.
