We all know this stuff, but its nice to see it in print, right?

We love our cats but don't always understand cat communication. Our feline friends use a combination of vocalizations, body language and smells to talk with each other and their special people. Here are 12 ways cats communicate.
1. Meows: These are rarely aimed at other cats. Instead meows are requests pointed at humans. For example, cats meow to be petted, for you to open the door or for you to wake up and fill their bowls. The more demanding Kitty becomes, the lower the pitch of the meow.

I thought I knew cat behavior pretty well.
Last year, I made a new friend. We were getting along wonderfully.
We meowed at each other for a while, I approached slowly, got
down low, and offered the back of my hand low and slow.
My new friend responded well. I was petting him for several
minutes; he was purring and it was obvious (to me) that he liked it.
...and then in a half of a blink of the eye he hit me like a rattlesnake.
Never saw it coming. Got infected like a Komodo Dragon bite.
Ten days on antibiotics.

The friendship ended badly.

Thanks for the nice photo. That adds to my day.

When I get a moment I'll have to post my colonoscopy video.

You just cannot ever make the mistake of thinking that a cat has any common sense.
As discussed on another thread. We once tried to lavish a semi feral cat with love, food and a warm home, but he disappeared and was never seen again. There were many times when we thought we would wind up being bitten by home, but we didn't.

Something similar happened to my husband several years ago. The cat was also black. An intact male stray. But fortunately the bite, severe and bloody as it was, didn't get infected. I think all the blood and then being scrubbed with an antibacterial soap may have washed out any bacteria from the cat's mouth. He refused to go to the ER. I now hesitate about petting cats I don't know. If they appear friendly, rub on my legs, I'll pet their head but will never touch their backs.

He may not have abandoned the home you gave him. He could have been poisoned, killed by a predator or hit by a car.
