About a week ago I was sitting here having my morning coffee when my dear Zebulon comes dragging himself across the carpet on his left side, pulling himself along with his right front paw. The other three legs were dragging along. OMG!!! I jumped out of the chair thinking he fell or something and was paralyzed. My heart raced and goosebumps sprang up everywhere. MY BABY BOY!!! He dragged himself along using the one paw until he got to me - then popped up into a sitting position, started to purr and solicited some petting. He was fine. What was that all about I wondered. Now he does it at least once a day and has Phaedra doing it also. Kitty see - kitty do. It must be something he invented because I can't recall any of my past cats doing this. Has anyone else seen their cats do this maneuver?
I have one who will drag himself along the floor like that, it usually is an invitation to one of the other cats to play, but he will go quite a distance. A friend has a cat who does it too, and he also does it when he wants her dog to play with him, but also if he wants to be pet.
Hm. You know, she's never dragged herself a long way across the floor, but there's a position Amber takes sometimes, flopped down on the carpet on her side, where she's sort of rubbing into it then she'll dig in one paw and pull herself a bit. She does move a short distance when she does that, but she won't do it for any significant distance.
So I'd guess he's just doing a much more elaborate version of the same thing. Dunno why though.
My boy who drags himself will also self-propel by twisting and turning on his back. He can scoot right across the living room floor doing that. I've tried to get some video of it but as soon as I point the camera he stops. As I said before, he is usually doing it while enticing one of the other cats to play with him. he's 12 years old, by the way.
(My Bridge Angel beagle dog Nikki used to do something similar in the grass. She preferred hills, she would twist and turn on her back all the way down the hill. I loved to watch her.)

Of course, since they are Cats, as I've said before it's not for us mere humans to wonder "why" LOL.
But I guess we can just put it down to self expression, they do it because they CAN.
"one of the cats" (read: Julius, though I try to give him the benefit of the doubt ) opened up the kitchen drawer, grabbed the sandwich bag full of catnip, ripped it open, and scattered the contents all over the kitchen floor. I noticed Cypher doing a similar weird crawl across the floor- on his side, pushing himself forward w/ one back leg. then he would flip over and do it on his other side. I think he was trying to season himself in catnip (reminds me of when I rub herbs on both sides of a salmon fillet before grilling it!). hilarious, esp. since he had that blissed out look an addict gets when they get their fix. both of the cats are crazy addicted to catnip and will attack me at the door if I bring home more from the store!
