There is such misinformation in these blogs...High in carbs because it is in gravy? Gravy is thickened by about 1-2% starch, thereby not contributing greatly to carb content. As you all seem to know, cats do not require carbs, and typically they do not eat them or enjoy the taste. If you ever left our a nice bowl of potato starch or tapioca starch, a cat most likely would not touch it. Sure, you might think it is a corner cutting cost saver to jack up the starch, but a cat food company wants your business...a cat simply will not eat an over-starched can.
If only that were really true. Sadly it is not. There are hundreds of canned cat foods on the market with 22% or more in carbohydrates.
I bought Soulistic cat food because I am trying to find a commercial cat food that is low in phosphorus (recently diagnosed with CKD) and NO CARRAGEENAN and no grain. I was feeding Blue Buffalo wet and some Newman's Own when I couldn't get 16 miles to the petsupermarket store. Then I found that they both reformulated sometime in the last year to add carrageenan. That is an inflammatory and contrary to what the food corporations say it doesn't matter if it is undegraded or not. It is used to test anti-inflammatory drugs. I switched to Nutro Naturals kitten soft loaf which I thought was a step down but still grain free and no carrageenan. Then with the diagnosis of inflammatory kidney disease (as opposed to ischemic kidney disease) I need to switch again. The list I found ((link below)) of low phosphorus commercial food is outdated in that some varities on the list are no longer available. Then most of the Nutro (not the kitten soft loaf I was feeding-----yet anyway) and the Wellness Core and all the Science Diet have the hated CARRAGEENAN in it and with confirmation of inflamation in his kidneys I would rather feed him baby food than that crap that can kill him.
Note that not all the Soulstic food is carrageenan free. I bought the Good Karma. You have to read the label on each variety same with the Nutro that I used to feed when phosphorus wasn't an issue. I was feeding Nutro Natural Choice Kitten soft loaf
The one thing I believe that is being left out here that is VERY important is that Weruva is made in Thailand! They distribute the food from the states but why in the world are they not manufacturing this food in the states where there are higher food quality standards? MONEY! They do not advertise this information and I feel we should all be concerned where furry friends food is being manufactured. They do not have the same standards in Thailand. This is the only issue I have with Weruva. I thought all along I was buying an amazing food for my feline friend, however, now I have learned this information I am on the search for a new food - one that is made in the US. Please consider this information when you make the decision which food to feed your sweet pet!
Nothing wrong with food from Thailand. Very high standards.
Note that not all the Soulstic food is carrageenan free. I bought the Good Karma. You have to read the label on each variety same with the Nutro that I used to feed when phosphorus wasn't an issue. I was feeding Nutro Natural Choice Kitten soft loaf
Just a general note: this post is from 2015. Not very old, but foods change all the time. It drives per owners crazy feeling settled on a food and then finding out that it changed. Of course if it's for the better, great, like in this case perhaps Soulistic has changed to being free of this ingredient entirely. (I have no idea either way, just using this as a hypothetical).
I don't think there is anyway around reading every label on every variety of a food. I think this is particularly hard on cat owners, but I don't see a way around it.
An example: if I want to avoid wheat gluten I can't go by people saying 'the Classic Varieties of Fancy Feasts lack wheat gluten'. As someone did say the other day and I have noticed that most don't. However I had just studied a can of chicken hearts and liver which DOES have it, so .......... have to read them all!
On the other end, I pulled up ingredients to show how awful Friskies is and in fact that particular variety, at least, has upped it's quality since the last time I looked.
There may be good news for us in that respect. The lower priced brands want to stay competitive. Some of us might benefit from that.
I've noticed a billion more 'no wheat, corn, or soy' products since 2005 when they were not found in grocery stores at all, and I had to have that for allergic dog.
