It truly is. We got the idea from a cat blog we saw some time back. It's the safest way to go. Letting them roam freely outside would never work for us.

I've had something similar for 4 years now. It is 8 x 8. They access it by jumping out a low window in the back of my house. I have a table on the inside which they use to jump up to the window then go out, and a chair on the outside which they jump up on to come back in. There are cross beams at each corner for stabilization, with wood corner pieces which they use for sleeping up high in the sunshine. The top is wire and we get so much snow here so they can really only use it 7 months out of the year. It just sets on grass, which I think is so important - it's so good for cats to chew grass. Plus they can dig and roll in the dirt. The cat house is in my privacy fenced back yard so no people can see in to know that they are there and no other animals can get in the yard to come near the cage. So far no birds have flown in, although they do perch on top. Some frogs have met their demise, though! The cats love their outdoor house, and opening it up again in the Spring is a big event!

Now they're also spending time in the new Florida room. It was an open front porch not getting much use so we closed it in. It's not heated. They love it out there too. So we put a large cat tree out there for them where they can see out both an east and south window. It's mostly windows. But that room wont be finished on the inside until we get back from Fl in April. At the window from the living room we have the same type cat door set in plywood. They can go in and out at will.
They (cats & dogs) tend to become family members really fast.

I've been thinking of this once the yard finally gets fenced. Right now the big dog has to go out with a lead so the expanded fence is first. He discovered a month ago he could jump over the little area we had for my small dog who passed away. I'd love to have a way for them to enjoy sunshine. Thanks for inspiring my future plans.

A cat sized door would be perfect since the dogs couldn't get out there and he feral ones around here wouldn't be too close. Poor kitties, but I don't want them transfering their potential disease.

How about some pics of it to give us ideas?

This is so true. We can't imagine life without these kitties now. The house was so silent and so .... I can't even explain it after our last dog had to be PTS. Empty? Void of life and laughter. Lonely? Once we got over our grief for the old dogs, we felt the emptiness. That feeling something was missing. It's hard to put in words. The day we brought Zephyr and Phaedra home from the shelter that all changed. Then 6 months later we adopted Zebulon. We're now a complete family.

I understand about the disease (and flea) transfers. That's why ours is on the deck and not on the ground behind the house. I considered have one build back there but then would have the ticks, flea and disease issues to deal with. Not only from passing cats, but we have a lot of wildlife here. It could have been any size behind the house but we felt, all in all, this was safer, though by necessity, smaller.

Everyone who knows us says our kitties hit the jackpot when we adopted them. We love to spoil them and see them happy and playful.
