Calorie counts of different dry or wet foods can vary a lot. I've read that the minimum they should eat is 15 calories per pound of body weight. There's also a formula that goes, 13.6 calories per pound of cat plus 70 calories. Of course most people don't work things out so exactly unless they want to help it lose weight. Is this cat new to you, or are you looking to help him lose weight? What type of food has he been eating up to now?

yeah: don't believe the feeding guidelines on the food. and they wonder why pets are so overweight!

Many people consider canned to be the best food over dry. Dry requires starch of some variety to act as a binder, and has a lot of filler stuff they don't need. Canned is more likely (well, some: you have to read the labels) to have meat first in the ingredients list. Also cats usually don't drink enough water, so canned food provides extra water. Some people mix the two.

Seriously, some foods can have double the calories of other brands, so it would be a wild guess without knowing what kind. Start out by feeding him as much as he'll eat, and just watch for too much padded feeling over his ribs. Let him get some exercise playing with a laser pointer or chasing toys to keep him in shape.

oh good grief, I hope your not waiting for a specific answer before you feed the poor thing! Dump a can of food on a plate and see how much he eats!

Feed him just slightly less than what it says on whatever package you have and see how he does. Adjust accordingly. Do you want a "straight answer" or a correct answer?

Seriously no one can tell you that without knowing what he weighs now and what he currently weighs! and forthat matter, how often are you feeding him?

geez, if you want an approximate answer because you just got him and have absolutely no clue how to feed your starving cat because you've never had one before (and if so, didn't you ask when you got him?) all cans & dry have a feeding guideline which most people use. It's too much and cats get overweight. But at least he'd be eating something. so feed him a little under the guidelines, or what he'll eat before he walks away. Wet is better than dry.
