craigslist for adopting cats
I have been looking at cl for cats. I am nervous about getting one from there though.
The rehoming fee makes me laugh, I guess they cannot sell animals so they call it a rehoming fee.
I was not aware that they have to supply the medical papers for them if there is a rehoming fee.
There is a cute munchkin cat on there now that has been for a few weeks. They are asking $ 80.00
Have any of you had any luck with adopting on cl?

I got Jasper thru CL. He is a great cat. I paid $20 for a full breed Bengal, declawed and nuetered. He is an awesome cat. I always wanted a Bengal or Toyger...but could never afford a kitten. He was a bit skittish for a few months...but has settled right in now. He is about 3 or 4 years old.

We just wait and they come to us. Cats/bunnies/dogs seem to appear on our doorstep.
As for the rehoming fee, a responsible foster will have vetted the animal and reimbursing vet and food expenses would be a part of the "rehoming" fee. It also helps to weed out people not serious about taking care of the animal.
However, at least here in NYC, I would not even consider going to CL for a pet. Often these people are irresponsible backyard breeders who snatch up pregnant ferals and "adopt out" the babies.
If your really want a pet, go to your local animal shelter or contact someone involved in cat rescue who is fostering. PetSmart and PetCo work with local shelters to help adopt out cats.

After taking one of my cats to a shelter last year due to behavioral issues, I immediately put an ad on CL with links to his shelter listing, links to his YouTube videos and pictures. I wrote a sales pitch for him with instructions to please go the shelter and adopt him.
One week later, I got an email from a woman telling me that after seeing his videos and pictures, she went down and adopted him. That was almost 6 months ago and he's now doing great in his new home. His new owner loves him to pieces and send me pictures and videos every few weeks. No behavioral issues now that he's the only cat in the house.
So CL worked very well for me. I was heartbroken about having to take him to a shelter but my walls and floors couldn't take it anymore. I knew once he got away from other cats he would be just fine.... and he was. His new momma thanks me constantly for tipping her off about what a wonderful kitty he is and how glad she is that she took the chance on him.
That little guy is a sweetheart and I miss him terribly, but he's better off now that he is the only cat in the house and there are no more dominance & territorial issues.

I haven't adopted from CL so far, but have been reading the listings. Right now there are many beautiful kittens, puppies, & adults in our part of America... ...Quite a few don't even ask for a rehoming fee. A good, loving furever home is asked for.

The rehoming fee is something I never heard of before I started looking for cats. I went to craigs list first and then ended up going to the shelter. I felt like those cats needed a home first

I went to the PetCo by my house to get a cat, and for a kitten, not any breed, it was going to be $75. Because it would have to be fixed, and given shots, by the Humane Society. I don't know about you guys...but $50 is a lot of money to me...so getting Jasper off of CL, for $20 was a deal. And I did not want a kitten...I wanted an older cat.
If you click on me, you can see his picture on my page.

I wouldn't be getting cats or dogs from the pet store, either. Either rescue, the shelter, animal control especially since they don't have long, or, I guess CL. I just am wary of CL because, as was mentioned, most of those people are BYB and are only in it for the money.

And you should be. Before we ended up atour local shelter we went to see some kittens advertised on CL. In my area all of them had fleas, worms and many had URIs. People don't care about unwanted kittens and didn't take care of them. They just wanted to unload them on anyone coming down the pike as fast as possible. I'm sure all areas of the USA aren't like here.

Most kittens are free on CL or the fee may be around $20. I haven't read anything about them needing medical papers if they ask a fee.

See above. $80 is hardly a "small fee"... it's a sale price. Look elsewhere.

Many Kitten Mills 9and Puppy Mills) have learned to do direct marketing via cheap soucres like CL. They operate Cat Breeding Factories and through the magic of marketing, they create for your veiwing and reading pleasure so nicely worded ad that appears like a forster or rescue operation. You will notice the phone number or email listed appears week after week, or that they constantly have a supply of kittens and maybe from time to time, some haggard looking adult cat that has been worn out in the breeding department. Many have leand to use the trigger key words like "Rehoming fee" or "Adoption fee" to mask the sale of the feline.
There are legitimate people looking to rehome or adopt out their pets they can't take care of anyloneger or that thye saved, but with so much fraud going on, please take the time to fully understand and know where and who your getting it from. Don't mistakenly contribute to Kitten Mills by buying a feline from them thinking your helping some poor cat out.
