A little over a year ago my SD had one of her cats PTS due to some kind of joint disease that made it painful for him to walk. He was 8 yrs old. I never did understand why he wasn't put on painkillers and given 3 to 6 months to see if there was any improvement. They have excellent painkillers today.
Today I found out she had the other two 9 yr old cats PTS. One male was blocked and had stones in this bladder. Their vet wanted $2,500 to do the surgery which I find outrageous. The surgery to remove the stones from the bladder doesn't take but 30 to 35 minutes start to finish and that includes flushing the urethra and suturing a drain from outside into the bladder. She told them the stones would come back. They had him euthanized. When my cat blocked back in the 1960s they had a medication given daily to the cat to prevent another blockage or stone formation... and the surgery to remove the stones from the cat's bladder cost about what it would cost to spay a female cat. X-rays would be separate to see if there were stones before surgery was even mentioned to the owner.
Their third cat always had a problem urinating on shoes or any item of clothing left on the floor. After the second cat was PTS, he stopped using the litterpan altogether. He urinated all over the house. They said it was like he lost his mind. He had been with the other 2 cats all his life, since he was a kitten and suddenly they were both gone... one after the other, and now this little guy is gone too.
Our Spooky was saved by a vet. His previous owners couldn't/wouldn't spend $200 to cure his UTI and wanted him put down. The vet asked if they would surrender him to her. They did, and he went to the Humane Society. Unfortunately for him, he was there about a year, but, fortunately for us, he was there when we were looking to give a new guy/gal a home. My days would have to be dark and desperate, indeed, to put down a pet over $200. $2,500 is a bit more understandable to me. I'm in a position to pay it and I would, but a lot of people aren't. I don't think the vet in this situation was a very good one either though.
My heart really goes out to the last kitty too. After Spooky died, his "brother" went a bit crazy too. He started peeing and pooping everywhere. He never did that before. My husband would keep him in the basement during the day because he was peeing on furniture and beds. It was bad. I was (still am) out of state dealing with my mom's illness and the consequences of it (selling the house now) so I was no comfort or help to the little guy during his grieving. My parents eventually moved in with us and brought their cat. The inappropriate peeing has stopped now, but the pooping is still an issue at times. With solid surface floors, vinegar, and tea tree oil (hard wood), I can live with it. We've discussed adopting another kitty around baby brother's age so he has a buddy after mom and dad move out. I couldn't put him down for inappropriate urination and defecation. I just couldn't do it myself.
So sorry and sad about the three sweet kitties. It's not fair.

Just from things my SD mentioned in conversations about her cats, I wouldn't bring any animals to her. She seems to be very expensive and not very knowledgeable. She sees nothing wrong with declawing and feeding dry kibble to cats.

My heart is just aching over this as I knew these kitties since they were small and no one said a word to me until AFTER the fact. I was never given the chance to help in any way. All three were the sweetest kitties you would ever want to meet.
It sounds like Spooky needed another cat in the house. How long did the problem last before he started to use the litterbox again?
This kind of thing is why I can't speak to several family members anymore. One of my brothers has a habit of calling me once a year or so to ask for advice about his pets, and I always find out something in these conversations that enrages me. This year he wanted to know if he should adopt a female or a male kitten as a companion to his existing male adult. In the course of the conversation he revealed that he returned a female cat to a kill shelter because 'he never liked the b*tch" and she wasn't friendly enough. In the same conversation he told me his fish were eating each other because he didn't research the species. When I berated him for this he told me not to take life so seriously and that he preferred to 'learn things on the fly'
I hung up on him and that was the last time we spoke. Fast forward six months and I see on his Facebook that he's looking to rehome a young female cat- I assumed that would be the female kitten he was looking to adopt. I wonder if she was a 'b*tch" too.

OK... I couldn't tolerate this guy for more than 5 minutes. I also have an obnoxious brother I have nothing to do with, but he is/was kind to animals - at least when people were around. Sometimes it's best to remove toxic people from our lives if possible. They do us no good even if they're relatives. No one needs the grief and angst they bring us.

Sickening. I'm sure he saw her as a b*tch also. How sad. I hope he decides to give up on adopting another cat. He's looking for something that does not exist except in his mind - the magical 100% perfect dream cat.
