I have an 8 yr old cat that has quit eating. We have taken her to the vet for tests, blood workup, two sets of xrays, ultrasound and nothing is showing up as wrong. Her teeth and mouth have been checked also. Last week she had diarrhea, but was eating, it's now been probably 5 days since she has eaten anything on her own. We have brought her home and are giving her appetite stimulants and syringe feeding her at this time. We have offered her every type of dry and canned food we can get our hands on, but she won't eat. She's acting somewhat normal, but she does wander quite a bit, like she can't get comfortable, she's also sort of like licking air....I don't know what else to do...is it time to say goodbye?

She's only 8 so I wouldn't say goodbye yet!! Is she an indoor-only cat or does she go outside? If she goes outside, could she possibly have eaten something the disagreed with her and caused the diarrhea?

When I am sick, I don't feel like eating -- I think cats are like that too, which makes sense. But 5 days is an awful long time to go without eating. Can you get a second opinion from another vet?

If you can, go to a specialty hospital and see a board certified internist. There IS a difference in their training and they can do a more comprehensive workup (eval) on your cat.

What did the vets say when they found nothing wrong? Didn't they have anything to say about this?

What's the appetite stimulant you're using?

Have you tried Beechnut Baby Food? - Chicken in chicken broth? Heated up a little to bring out the aroma.

Make sure the vet checks her nasal passages. Friends cat wouldnt eat for months. He had to force feed her. One days he saw black sluggish matter at her nose, pulled it out and she started eating again. If cats cant smell food, they wont eat it

I am baffled why the vet doesnt know whats wrong with your cat. Try asking your question on the following pet website (click pet talk & join for free). I hope your cat gets better.

NO!

OP, do NOT listen to this! Cats cannot go more than 24 hours (give or take), without eating or they will SHUT DOWN! This is not like a dog.

If your cat is not eating, it is time to get your cat back to the vet and have it put on an IV for food. Your cat WILL die if you sit and wait for it "to feel better". That doesn't happen with cats.

You need to get a second opinion. Eight is not old for a cat. She's probably about equal to a 40 yr old person. Cat's can live up to age 20.

Yes, you're right. More like the 50s. Even people aren't "old" at that age anymore.
