SO took him in the basement and Kitty Katty was showing him around. He was checking everything out and sniffing things here and there.

He wants to get him used to going down there so he can put his litter box down there. I don't really want to do that. He has never made it past the second step.

We needed to get ready to go so I scooped him up and put him on about the 5th step up to see if he would walk back up. Nope.

He was howling. He acted like he was stuck there and didn't know what to do. He jumped off the side of the stairs. I tried again. I have never heard him meow other than a teensie weensie barely there meow.

Well, he can meow.

Good for Charlie! Might take a while but I bet he'll figure it out. Orion was terrified of my glass topped desk but Joe jumped right on it. Joe is not as bright as Orion and is quite fearless - uh, dumb I think, LOL so maybe Charlie needs more time to realize he can do it.

This is just a thought and don't know if it would work, but how wide (and steep) are your stairs? Could you lay a narrow plank (with carpet on it) up one side of the stairs so Charlie wouldn't have to climb the steps, but rather 'walk uphill' sort of.

They are not any more steep than an average set of stairs, and they go from one floor to the basement. That is actually what he did at the end of my desk. From the floor to the top of the desk is a ramp covered in carpet. It is between the desk and the wall.

He uses it every single time and is no longer scratching up my legs.
