I think it's a great idea. We adopted a 6 year old wonderful cat last year and he has been great. I have only ever had kittens, and we did adopt a kitten this year, but the older kitties need a chance too!

I love the orange male cats too, they are just such sweeties.

Definitely adopt that Red Boy, you won't regret it! With good loving care and fed the right diet, 10 isn't that old at all. To keep him in optimal health, feed him an all wet (canned food) diet, avoid fish.

I, too, am partial to reds. I look forward to hearing more about him, when you bring him home.

I think it's a terrific idea to adopt an older cat. Best of luck to you and to whichever feline becomes your new best friend.

My tuxedo cats say it's OK if you prefer orange kitties, even though they have a grudge against the one down the street ...

You're doing a wonderful thing by adopting a senior kitty, and giving he/she a loving home. Really, 10 isn't all that old, and you should have many good years together ahead of you.
I say go for it, and please keep us updated on the adoption.

Default New sweetie

Hi thank you everyone for your rapid replies! I love having a cat again!

We went to the shelter yesterday afternoon. The old orange guy I was looking at on their website was not there. I hope that means someone adopted him. I asked the volunteer who was the oldest cat they had and he said it was a 5-year old female... Hmm... Well I saw many, many cats I liked and it was hard to choose just one.

My husband saw a pair of black and white kittens (only 4 months old) and liked how playful they were. I was reluctant because our last cat was extremely "active" and caused problems. I came back on my own and handled the kittens, but they were scared of strangers and the dogs barking, and one of them was sick and taking medication. I felt bad for them and thought it wasn't a good idea to take one of them. Directly below their cage was a grey and white female. She is small but I was told she's fully grown, not a kitten, and no one knows exactly how old she is (she doesn't seem old though). She was acting really friendly so I liked her right away. I took this girl home yesterday.

So far the new cat has been extremely affectionate towards us and wants to follow us everywhere. She has been exploring our home but there is not much to explore. Now I have to think of a new name for her because I don't like the one they gave her at the shelter.

Adopting a senior cat is not a bad idea but you’ll have to take into account all the things he may need if you want him to live longer including foods and hygiene. We’ve got four kittens and their mother which is about 6 years but looks like already old. In fact, it is not a matter of age but general care.

Congratulations! I hope you and she will be very happy together.

We'd all love to see a picture of her, if you can swing it.

I adopted an older cat, I am not really sure how old Jasper is...it took time for him to bond wi me, about two years. He was quite standoffish for awhile.

But, I was used to my former cats, who were Velcro, because I got them as kittens.
