Had a cat for a long time (RIP Boyfriend Cat) who drooled so much some family members refused to love on him. When the love session was over, he would stand up, shake his head and cat spit would fly. But I loved him so much.
You brought back a sweet memory. My childhood cat, as she aged, would drool when I pet her. It got so bad I would use a napkin to gently dab her face if she was on my lap. She lived to be 19. I still miss her.
I also have one that drools. My soon-to-be 9 year old girl Sheba drools quite a bit when she's being loved on. She likes to stand in my lap and make biscuits with the top of her head down against my chest, while purring up a storm as I pet her. She really gets into it, and she keep it up for 10 to 15 minutes sometimes. When she's done she always leaves a large wet spot on the front of my shirt. She's done this same routine ever since she was a little kitten. It's cute, but sometimes her claws do a number on my legs (thin pants- my mistake), and I have to make her stop.
I've had three droolers.........all girls. Lily is my current drooler. She gets up on my lap, starts her kneading............and then the drooling starts. She likes to rub her drool on my wrist. I always have Kleenex around for cleanups.

My Maine Coon did exactly that every night when I came home from work. I thought it was wonderful. He did ten years ago and I still think about the drooling when my current Maine Coon lays on my chest (but doesn't drool dammit).
Sniffy would sit on my lap and make muffins and get so involved with it she would forget to swallow. Pretty soon I would have to take a napkin and wipe her chin off from the drool !
From watching my cat Yoko's kittens, I think it's a reflex from kittenhood that helps them find a nipple in all that fur when they're babies. It plasters the fur down out of the way. I also read once that kittens have favorite teats, so it makes sense that this could be another way of marking their territory with their smell. My best boy cat, George, is also a big slobber puss.
I had a boy with chronic stomatitis. Poor guy. Had all his molars removed and he still had problems. Drooled some nasty smelling stuff, and used it to slick my hair into a stinky mohawk while I slept. He spent most of his life on steriods.
Toby drools while I'm scratching his chin. And sometimes Neptune drools all over Toby when they're wrestling and he play bites him. It freaked out my friend when she reached to pet Toby as he walked by and his back was wet.
