apartment space and litterbox issues

You could give having one litter box a try... I have had 2 cats and 1 litter box majority of the time I've had cats and had no issues here. The box needs to be scooped more often, but that's about it.

The other thing I'd suggest is the furniture options others have stated already.

I did this too when I had an apartment. I actually had two closets in the bedroom, and one was for the litter box. I just kept the door cracked open and it was a great solution.
