I think one can get to the point (with the number of cats they have) that it becomes difficult, if not impossible to monitor them and give them the personal attention they should have. That number would of course depend on the individual or the number of people in the household. I know there are probably folks on this forum who have 15 or 20+ cats in their home and have the space, financial resources, and time it takes to give them all the best possible home. But they are likely an exception. My wife and I had 7 cats and 2 small dogs when she passed away. Together we were able to handle that responsibility quite well, but after her passing it was almost to many for me to handle (financially & otherwise). Now, seven years later I'm down to 5 cats who are mostly seniors, and I'm not taking in any more as they pass on. For me, 3 cats to take care of is my comfortable limit, all things considered.
My point is that things can happen that can put a person in an overload situation with pets. I certainly never would have put myself in that situation intentionally. My wife and I simply took in too many animals over the years, and weren't thinking ahead very well.

I do think I qualify as a crazy cat lady (hubs and I have 22) BUT they are all very well taken care of, my house is clean, they are very expensive but we have it covered and our needs are covered as well - I am certainly very socialized with people, so I guess I'm crazy in the good way. Not a mental case, definitely not a hoarder - you will never see me on tv being hauled away in a straight jacket with a film crew inside my house filming cats with runny eyes and poop everywhere (gag...just to think about stuff like that...ewww). My niece tells me "If you even have to ask how many is too many- you're a crazy cat lady."
I guess while society is making fun of us, they're just giving somebody else a break for 5 minutes or so!! Karma, baby...

I'd 5+ is the beginning. If you start wearing cat sweaters, that match your cat coffee mug, and have a calendar with each one of your cats featured each month that makes a crazy cat person. But the fact that you don't have many and that you think that you may be a crazy cat lady imply to me that you are a sane individual which doesn't make you cat lady material

I have lots of cat mugs, and calendars, and pillows, and stuffed cats ... but no sweaters! No bumperstickers, no hats, and no totebags!

Definition of a crazy cat lady:

You look out your dining room window and spy a gray cat sleeping on the driveway partially under your car. You put your coat on for a closer look... only to find out........

DUH!!!!! The snow melted in somewhat of a cat pattern!!!!!

28 is my highest number - so far. So that's the cutoff.
