We have two homes (long story, just go with it). Our three cats live at one home. They have a RFID door that reads their microchips and lets them in and out, but one day one of the cats came home injured and had to be confined for a few weeks. So we set the door to not let the cats go out, and locked all the other windows and doors. The injured cat has a cone on his head too (poor thing).
Today my husband went to the house and found feathers everywhere and a dead bird on the dining room table. All the windows and doors were closed and locked. The cat door was still locked. One cat was outside but came in when he got there (the door allows trips "in" but not trips "out" when locked). We don't know how she got out, as she was in last night and all the doors were locked including the cat door.
Haven't a clue. But a mysterious occurrence involving a cat is no big surprise. I have them around my house on a regular basis.
Good luck figuring it out.
If memory serves I believe there is an Agatha Cristie mystery, The Murder of Roger Ackroyd, that has this same issue at its core. Perhaps reading it might help you solve this mystery.
Does that mean you solved the mystery and know how it happened?
I suspect we will never know...
The only thing I can figure is that one cat managed to figure out how to "pull" the locked cat door instead of "push" to go out, and got out and brought the bird in. Or, the bird happened to wedge itself into the cat door.
That's my best guess. Couldn't have gotten in the chimney, cat couldn't have gotten out the basement.
Came home today to a giant, and I do mean GIANT, pile of poop on the carpet. Thanks, cat.
