They have the little hand held thing to check the chip.......they always check it when they first put it in, to verify the chip number.

Anyway, once in awhile, just ask your vet to check the chip location.

One thing though, we never did talk about what they do if the chip has migrated. I'll have to ask next time.

If the chip has migrated to far, I would imagine they would have to put in another chip in the right place. Sure wouldn't want to do surgery to move the original chip.

Thankfully, chip migration is rare........but it can and does happen.
.........and it happened to one of my cats since I last posted in this thread......glad this thread was bumped back up......here is my update.

During her annual check-up we checked for Katie's chip......and could not find it!

Mind you.....we KNEW she was chipped and looked and looked and looked.....nothing. Looked and looked some more and finally found it.....in her armpit.

It was so hard to find the vet decided to put in another chip........ free of charge.

Honestly, I do not think a shelter would have found that chip.

So, just a reminder......have your vet check for the chip during yearly checkups!

Better safe than sorry.

Maya is chipped. The shelter did that when they got her. They updated her info to mine when they handed her over to me. But her name in the shelter was the name they gave her so that's what's on her chip. I should ask my vet if that can be updated when she goes in for a checkup in a few months.

Holy crap, what a silly response. And "silly" isn't really the word I wanted to use.

I am wondering if that poster doesn't believe in spaying and neutering for the same reason, because they are unnatural.

And what about vaccinations and flea meds? They are unnatural too.

My indoor cats were both chipped. You never know when an accident can happen and they will get out. Chipping a cat is inexpensive (sometimes free) and it without it, your cat is unlikely to make it home if they accidentally get out.
