It has been 5 years and our 2 cats still only tolerate each other, that is when we're looking. They play games charging each other and at best, hiss at each other. When we're not looking or sneak in the house when we've been away, we've caught them sleeping together on the bed, on the couch or sitting together on the carpet. When we're home, they stalk each other, our domestic female loves to sneak up on our feral when she's sleeping and poke her, she jumps about 10 feet in the air, hisses and it's all over until the next time. Our feral Smoke ALWAYS gets her back and will growl and/or howl when she's not in the mood to be played with. They don't physically fight, never has been any blood shed. Your cats may never be best friends, but they will learn to tolerate each other. We gave up worrying about it in our home, but have resisted the temptation to get a third cat for fear we would have 3 that just tolerate each other.

Out of my 5, one is a male (& the oldest at 17) and the other 4 are all females from 9 to 13 years old. They were all brought into the house at 8 to 10 weeks of age over a period of years. Stormy the male has always been loved & loved on by every other cat in the house. But the 4 girls only tolerate each other, and peace is maintained as long as their personal boundaries are observed. Based on my experience, I could say that males are easier-going and get along better with other cats than females do. But I know you can't make a general statement like that because all cats are different & other variables figure in. That said, if I had it to do over & had a choice I would try to have a few less females, and a few more males.
I have to add that I would not trade any of my cats for anything in world. Love them all dearly... attitudes and all.
