We had several days of visitors. One occupied the cave aka den, had a white noise machine running and literally blocked the inside of the double door with her luggage (This door leads to the room and the half bath for living room/cave, she was a tag along). The noise woke me up as it does not "fit". Both cats would not settle for the night, shed like crazy (150 brush strokes per day are our routine), be edgy (ShadowC at destroyed one side of a leather chair which has never happened) and throw up.
Guest gone, cats are in their normal day time spots, seem to be very calm.

I guess I don't get out enough.... what is a white noise machine(?).... and why would your guest need one? Sounds like it had a very negative effect on your cats.

A white noise machine just makes a constant noise, much like a fan. One of my sons can only sleep with the noise of a fan running. I can only fall asleep with the TV playing on low volume. Whenever I sleep somewhere not at home (which is not much, since I have my own furries to be home for), I either fall asleep to the TV, or if there is no TV available, I have a White Noise App on my phone that turns off after a set time.

Ok, I've got it now and thanks for that explanation. I wasn't familiar with white noise, probably because I've always had the opposite problem. For the most part I have to have dead silence to be able to sleep, and have always been that way. I can tolerate (or get used to) certain sounds in the house as long as they're constant (refrigerator, electric heater, fan, etc.), but when new to me it takes a while for my brain to be able to tune them out. I guess at that point my familiar sounds actually become white noise too. One thing I've never been able to tolerate is an old style electric clock (with a dial face & motor) beside by bed. I can actually hear the hum of the motor & it drives me crazy. Fortunately modern digital clocks don't have that, and aren't a problem.
Anyway, thanks for the answer.
I always sleep with a box fan running, winter or summer. I have done this for 2 decades, and I have had many cats (and dogs). Not one was bothered by this in the least. I have also used a white noise machine that sounds like various things from a thunderstorm to a train to an airplane. I wonder why yours were so stressed?

They are indoors, we are very quiet (music, TV, conversation - low key aside from occasional parties), my hearing is exceptional and noise is close to painful, aside from regular train/flight traffic hardly any outside noise but birds. It does not fit and furries cannot identify it. Power tools, vacuum, printer, ... are known factors.

Interesting. I also have a quiet household, don't like a lot of noise. But I flip on my fan at night and the furbabies know it's time for bed

I lived in a teensie NYC apt. on a busy street, which had the bonus of a fire station. I got pretty used to it, but I did wake up far earlier than I wanted, which prompted me to buy a white noise machine. I sat it on a bookshelf by the bed and turned it on to play with.
My cat, Pooks, sat on the floor and stared at it. Then he got on the bed and stared up at it. Then he jumped up on the shelf and sat beside it and stared. Finally, he swatted it several times and suddenly just shoved it off onto the floor. Often when he did nasty things he would take off until he saw whether I was going to cop an attitude, but this time he just sat on the shelf and looked at me. I got one of those looks that just screamed, "What a jerk."
