My 16 year old cat all of a sudden flew off the bed and ran around the apartment twirling in circles and was all fluffed up like she was scared or being chased. I thought she had something stuck on her, but, I couldn't find anything. I got her and carried her back and she stayed under the bed for about an hour and now she seems just fine. What the heck? Anybody experienced stuff like this? Could she have had a bad dream??

I imagine that cats are no different from humans, as we age our mind starts to play tricks on us. She may have had a bad dream. But cats do weird stuff like that all the time, Lucky will be laying there and suddenly wake up and start staring at the wall, like he is seeing something. Freaks me out because I wonder if he can see things I can't !

I've also seen our cats get spooked for no reason we can determine, and go into hiding for a while.

Just what don1945 wrote - unexplainable - or could have been something as simple as a gas bubble going through the "pipes" and causing discomfort ... in their minds animals can't separate an internal pain or discomfort from something they believe is external that they either need to flee from or fight. One of my older cats is becoming painfully arthritic in his hips. When he gets up on something in a weird way, it must hurt because he'll either try to bite something invisible near his hips (or my hand if it's in the vicinity) thinking that some external force is causing the pain.

Another cause of bizarre behavior could be a smell that we humans can't smell. Or a sound we can't hear or one that we can, but we ignore it or don't pay attention to it. In one of our previous houses, after the heat went off the metal duct work would quietly bang as it cooled off - I knew what it was and never really "heard" it, but to one of my skittish cats, she'd dive for cover thinking it was someone coming through the front door.

Or a bad dream. Animals do dream. I'm sure of it!

Could well have been a dream. Also, cats will cat, and running around like all the hounds of hell are chasing them is a cat thing.

Our now departed cat, Silhouette, dreamed. Sometimes, she'd pop up out of a dead sleep with a startled "Meow??", then look around. Once she realized everything was okay, she tucked her head back in and went back to sleep. I wish I could shake dreams off that easily!
