Once again, thanks to everybody for the information. Cant get the Beechnut baby food here unfortunately and we don't seem to have an equivalent, so I'll be trying the recipes in the Nutrtion link with a view to moving him onto a raw food diet as soon as I can. He has now started having sneezing fits which I gather from Google isnt all that unusual with prednisone. He's been doing the teeth gnashing thing ever since the operation so I guess he has been feeling nauseous for a couple of weeks now. I feel really bad that the op has added to his problems rather than alleviated them.

UPDATE

Well, what a difference a week makes. I stopped giving him the steroid tablets as he was getting so distressed by pilling process, wasn't eating despite having had them for some days, and had started violent sneezing fits. I decided to give him a couple of days peace and quiet from chemicals as he had been thru' so much in such a short space of time - long journeys to and from the specialist vet, general anaesthetic, being cut open as ultra sounds had revealed some areas requiring further investigation, endoscopy, colonoscopy, biopsies, antibiotics, (ineffective) appetite enhancers, painkillers which completely zoned him out, and then steroids.

I made sure to syringe him water regularly, and also kept offering food when he 'asked' for it (he still kept turning away) and then basically let him be. I left the heater on for him at all hours - he loves the heat - and he then started to sleep - a lot - very dreamful sleep to judge by the twitching and pawing. After 2 days he was much more relaxed in the way he moved around when he was awake, and started asking for food. He still wouldn't eat any of the IBD foods or chicken meat and in desperation I decided to try him with some 'forbidden' cat food I found stashed in a cupboard, just to try and get some calories into him. I put down a little - chicken & jelly - and much to my surprise he ate it with enthusiasm.

Over the next few days he was fed mainly chicken, and a little bit of chicken & jelly cat food as a treat. He also ate a little commercial raw cat food one day. I put too much of it down the following day and he threw it up, so I am going to transition him to raw very gradually. With the food generally, little and often seems to be the pattern he prefers. It's very weird that it's the jelly cat food he goes for. I'd previouslly spent a fortune on the specialist IBD cat food - which he basically licked the gravy off and then abandonned. He wouldn't eat it even if it was all mashed up into a kind of soup. Hills dry for sensitive stomachs was pretty much all he was taking.

I haven't managed to check on the poop situation yet as he has access to the garden and is currently 'evading' my scrutiny. (He caught me checking once, clearly thought I was mad, and has since been finding private areas. I'm reluctant to keep him indoors and litter tray him overnight again yet, as I'm sure he'll think it means a trip to the vet is imminent, and that will affect his 'output'. He is also not terribly skilled at using a tray. He tends to position his paws inside the tray, but his derrière outside!).

I can tell from the relaxed way he moves now that he is not in much, if indeed any, discomfort, he is putting on weight very nicely, is asking for food, and actually eats it - all of it - as long as I don't out too big a portion at a time. His coat is becoming very silky - best condition I have seen it. Absent from all this of course is dry cat food. I took the opportunity of his wanting no food, to get rid of the dried stuff.

Thanks to all for moral support and the previous advice which I found really useful.
Best wishes,
Caff

That is great news- one thing I will add about my cat with IBD is that I do have to serve his food in small portions throughout the day (for example, his breakfast is served is 3-5 separate portions). Even though he can tolerate the raw turkey much better than anything else, if I were to feed him large portions, he would definitely puke. Since my cat is so old and doesn't have a weight problem, I basically feed him anytime he wants - just broken into multiple portions.

My cat has IBD also.

The reason he or she won't eat is likely the gerd pain. Here's what we tried (check with your vet first)

My cat weights 7.7 pounds and I am giving him 2 mg of pepsid ac a half hour before eating. Then the food will not hurt the stomach so much.

One food that helped for a while is Primal Freeze dried rabbit cat food. You can grind in a coffee grinder and add a litlte water. Then sprinkle with salt free dolphin safe tuna as a bribe. https://www.chewy.com/primal-rabbit-formula-nuggets-grain/dp/141884?utm_source=google-product&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=f&utm_content= Primal&utm_term=&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI3_vjovr16gIVMxh 9Ch0mQAzREAQYASABEgIhgPD_BwE

Many cats with IBD are allergic to a certain food. Poultry is a common allergy. You need a prescription for this food but it helped my cat a lot. https://www.chewy.com/royal-canin-veterinary-diet-selected/dp/35154 You can grind up this freeze dried rabbit as a topper to bribe also...no need to wet otherwise will spoil and waste. https://www.chewy.com/instinct-raw-boost-mixers-rabbit/dp/117336

You can also order fresh ground rabbit that can help as well.

You might want to try cooking fresh lamb and mixing in unsalted dophin safe tuna also. That's what my cat is eating now along with the other things. Good tuna...no salt...almost the same price as cat food...but Can't feed too much or cat will get mercury poisoning but as a bribe mixed in with other food maybe try.

I tried this for awhile and it helped solidify the cats stool. You will need a syringe to squirt down your cats throat. You will also need a thick sweatshirt and gloves so the cat won't scratch you and you can hold him steady when squirting down the cats throat.

You could also just use probiotic and a little psillium husk.

Clay is also good for healing the intestine https://www.amazon.com/Rx-Vitamins-Pets-Clay-Dogs/dp/B008F7M4KY/ref=sr_1_2?dchild=1&keywords=luxolite+clay+cats&qi d=1596146865&sr=8-2

The gerd causes the intestine to bleed. Also get pet safe hemp in glycerin as a pain reducer. It is very painful. They will have good days and bad days but with the diet changes and adding in these things to help your cat may improve. Good luck.

Put lots of water bowls around as they are very dehydrated. Notice if they are sitting in the meat loaf position this could mean they are in pain and need attention. If you have questions reach out to me at goose@post.com
