I called the nurse this afternoon and she said so far Angel is doing well. I explained the abandonment issues he might have and she said that might explain why he's soiling in inappropiate places.

They are going to keep him one more night and she told me not to worry as they will find out what's wrong with him. She claims he loves the Hills C/D prescription can food they feed him. Well He doesn't love it when he's at home!

They'll also give me pills to be given to him every 3 days to stimulate his appetite. I hope this is the last time as it's very stressful for me as well as him, I'm sure. I've been racked with worry so some nights I have several straight bourbon drinks to help me sleep.

Do you have a carrier or a cage to mimic the vet's kennel where he seems to eat and eliminate just fine?????

Default Update...

Yesterday I received a call from the clinic that I could bring Angel home. Although I just started another federal job, my boss who's an animal lover gave me the okay to take 2 1/2 hours leave so I could pick Angel up.

When I got to the clinic the vet techs told me that as soon as they removed Angel from his carrier last Saturday and placed him in the kennel, he immediately went to eat. They said Angel was probably angry with me and could sense my anxiety because I was anxiously hovering over him, coaxing him to eat and drink and therefore refused! Well, that cat has a strong will because he held out for almost 7 days without hardly eating or drinking anything!

They said if he acted like that again, to just ignore him while keeping an eye on him. They also said the Doctor wasn't charging me for the hospital stay and the only thing I was being charged for was the medicine (mirtazapine) to stimulate his appetite. So the bill was only $31.00.

As soon as I brought him home I had to wash him. Because of his long fur there was some fecal matter, litter and other stuff that I had to clean off of him. Then I blow dried him and groomed him a little, by cutting off some of the matted fur and combing out some of the tangled fur.

I then set down his food and water bowls and told him in a loving, caring way that I wasn't abandoning him, I just was worried about him which is why I had to let him stay at the hospital for several days. I reassured him he would always have a home with me as long as he is living. (Actually, even after that as I had all my pets who have passed cremated and then when I die I want to be cremated and have all of their ashes interned with mine. It's symbolic to me that we were here together on this physical earth and imo we'll be together later on in the afterlife.)

After sleeping for a while, shown here:

he got up and started to eat like there was no tomorrow! When I got home from work today, much to my relief he was eliminating in his litter box again! Thank God! I know he's old and probably doesn't have much time left, but I'm so grateful to have a little more time with him.

Default Bad news...

Last week Tuesday, I made an appointment for Angel to see the groomer last Saturday, but I took him to the vet instead. On the Thursday before, I noticed he excreted what looked like a teaspoon of mucus twice from his anus.

When I called the clinic the following Friday morning, they said to bring him in, as this wasn't normal. So on Saturday I took him in. Dr. Obara told me an ultrasound specialist would come in on Monday, but he didn't know if the specialist could do Angel on Monday, as he has other pets already scheduled. I asked if I could leave Angel there, as I really didn't want to use annual leave from work to bring him back on Monday.

Fortunately, the specialist was able to give Angel an ultrasound on Monday. Then Dr. Obara called me yesterday to inform me the preliminary results of the ultrasound shows Angel has a large mass in his intestine and another one by his liver. Dr. Obara is pretty sure those large masses are cancer. He's going to give me a call later today to discuss palliative care for Angel after he gets the complete report from the radiologist.

He also shared with me that his sister's 9 year old cat went downhill after his first treatment of chemo and when he asked her if she would do it again, she said no.

So I brought Angel home yesterday, gave him lots of love and treats. He's still enjoying life, and as long as he has quality of life I'll hang in there with him. When he no longer has quality of life, then I'll take him to the vet to have him put to sleep. All I can do is make him as comfortable as possible, and spoil him with all his favorite treats and activities.

This has been going on since the beginning of the second week of May. At least now I know what's wrong with him.

I am very, very sorry. Our (late) Tucker had lung cancer, and the tumors were located near his spine and heart, making surgery impossible. We chose the same as you--to spoil him rotten until we couldn't.

Treasure every day you have together (as I'm sure you will).

So very sorry to hear this. All you can do is make the best of the time Angel has left. Wishing the best for you both.
