We have to trap a feral boy. He is older and is very trap-wary. I have not been able to get him to go into the trap at all. I trapped a female and she fell for the whole put-the-food-near-the-cage-then-farther-and-farther-in-the-cage thing. Got her this morning. Unfortunately, feral boy saw her get trapped, likely increasing his wariness of the trap. I have a lot of experience using traps (Havaharts), and I know that once a cat gets wary of them, it is really, really hard (sometimes impossible) to ever get them to go in the trap.

I have read a bunch about drop traps (Tomahawk drop traps and transfer cages, to be specific) and people rave about how the drop trap helped them catch ferals they had been trying to catch for years. I have a need to get this guy trapped fairly soon. Has anyone used a drop trap with or without a transfer cage and if so, how did it go? How easy or hard was it to get the cat to go under the trap to eat?

Just to make it clear what I am talking about, here is a link to the Tomahawk traps:

Merry Christmas to my fellow cat-lovers!

You're right that cats are smart and will forego food for the sake of freedom.

I'm curious how the drop trap works ... at the first hint of sound cats start to bolt -- wouldn't a tail or body get slammed under the trap's sides as it came down? As well, I would think it would be harder to get a cat to go under something rather than into something, but I have zero experience with this, so I could be all wet with my thoughts.

Is there any way to disguise a traditional Havahart trap so that your feral boy doesn't know what it is? What if it was stuck full of branches so that it looked like a bush? What size Havahart do you use? Is it possible to get your hands on an extra large 2-door one if that's bigger than the one you've been using?

I am using a raccoon-sized havahart. I'll have to take a look at what bigger sizes they have. I do have to be able to get the trap in my Honda to go to the vet. LOL

Supposedly, if you put the food way in the far corner on the side that isn't propped-up, the chances of catching their tail or other body part in the drop trap is pretty small. That's one reason I was hoping to hear from someone with experience using one, 'cause I have lots of questions, too.
